Vmax is defined as the maximum initial velocity of the enzyme catalysed reaction under the given conditions. It is the limiting value that Vo approaches as the substrate concentration approaches infinity.

Vmax is used as a value in all sorts of things, not just biology. Namely, physics and kinematics, used to indicate maximum velocity....written as Vmax. I figured that's where the name came from.....?

dang i really thought i was on to something here, the V is just a place holder for a variable, and max just means... maximum. i feel so shot down..

Well there's always this story:

I dare say Mr. Wile E. Coyote shoulda fought fire with fire, a Morley built 1500cc Vmax would have tipped the scales nicely in his favor. Alas, there were no Yamaha Vmax's back then so he had to resort to all sorts of gimmics and shoddy equipment from Acme. A Yamaha Vmax woulda saved him all those temporary deaths and put a severe hurt on the roadrunner population in Arizona!
