The rear oxygen sensor has absolutely nothing to do with driveability. So if you punch out the cats or just stick a straight pipe in there, you will only throw a code for emissions sake. The car will run 100% the same (actually better due to less restriction).
To get rid of the code, there is a VERY simple and cheap secret that i've been doing for years without any hiccups. Take a spark plug defouler set (essentially a spacer kit for hte spark plugs). These come with two per box and can be purchased at any auto parts store. Screw the defoulers into each other so it doubles the amount of space it extends it out. Then drill out the inside so your oxygen sensor can poke through the middle. Screw the defoulers into the exhaust, then screw the oxygen sensor into the defouler.
Viola, no more code!
All the sensor is is a heat sensor. By spacing it out, you cool down the sensor in the process, dropping the code.
On a side note, I would just find someone who has taken there cats off there mustang or something and just have them welded in place. I've got 8 cats sitting around that im using on my buddies bronco....all from friends mustangs.
