Can someone tell me if there is any difference in the diameter of the front forks between a 1986 and a 2005. I want to swap out forks and need to know if I have to change out the tree as well. I don't have the 2005 forks on hand yet, so I cannot measure them. Also, are there any overall differences in the frames between the two years?

85-92 has 40mm forks.
93-07 has 43mm forks.
You need triples to match the forks you intend to mount.

Yes the forks are larger for 2005 so you will need the triple tree. 85-92 forks are the small diameter & 93-2007 will interchange. No diffrence in frames.
Thanks guys, I thought so on the forks but wasn't sure about the frame. When I was researching the forks on-line, some sites had the forks at 40mm and I new they were upgraded to 43mm at some point. My 2005 that was rear-ended in December was totaled...bent frame and a $8800 estimate. I am buying the bike back and basically putting it's front end, engine, electronics and cosmetics (needing a new rear fender of course) on my 1986 then basically parting out the rest. I appreciate the info.
