Did you mean a modified Vrod?

An acquaintence of mine bought a new 08 Vrod and we did several roll-ons. He claimed he wasn't proficient enough to do a standing start run.

It wasn't even close. Maybe he was just jacking with me. :confused2:

In my expeience the Vrod will definitely run with a Vmax......

A stock V-Rod vs a stock Vmax. The Max will kick the living crap out of the Rod.

I'm not sure. The Vrods I raced were at the drag strip and "looked" normal. exhaust probably, which means if it's a harley then it's probably got some aftermarket tuner on it since the dealers always push the pipe and tuner package.

I usually run in the 11.29-11.40 range and I beat 'm every time but nby the s;limmest of margins, a few bike lengths or so...

Maybe I ran across a couple of modded Vrods......

They lost.....but it wasn't a Ferrari vs Winnebago kind of thing:confused2:

Yea, it won't be like racing a Virago but they won't beat a vamx with equivalent riders on board both bikes,

I had a friend back in my home town 25 years ago with a V65 Magna. He was so upset being skunked by my new Vmax that he ordered a blower for his Honda. Sadly, he died in a plane crash before he ever got it put together.

Anyway, I'd go so far as to say his Magna would have easily taken a stock Vrod also. My runs against a stocker weren't even close. My 85 is still bone stock, right down to and including the OEM Dunlops.

I've managed to elude the mod monkey now for 25 years. (well, give or take the darn Yamaha small wind screen I put on two years ago)

The V65's were damn quick bikes, the original "cruize missile". King of the hill for 3 MY's till the Max came out. There was an aftermarket supercharger kit for the 65, but they're extremely rare today and bikes that have it sell for big bucks.

The Magna's had their own unique set of quirks just like the Max, so it's tough to make a call on which was the better bike. All the early Honda V4's tended to run hot and have just-barely-capable cooling systems. The 65's had problems with the oil pump not having enough pressure at idle to get oil to the top of the upright cylinder head. As such, it was very rare to see a V65 with over 50k miles on it. There was a connector to the R/R that liked to get hot and melt under the seat, and that carb rack is anybody's worst nightmare.

But I've never had to touch the motor of my V30(only repair I ever did was replace the original plug wires to solve a misfire), and now I'm going to have popped the Max's case open twice. Once for the shift segment, and now again for the starter clutch. The rad drain is leaking also. Hardly catastrophic issues, but repairs nonetheless. I don't mind wrenching so much, it's spending money on parts that bugs me. But there's just nothing like the total excess of torque and effortless acceleration the Max provides, so I can put up wit it's temperaments.

Here's the update. I ran with my buddy that has the M109, rolling start in 1st gear, like 5mph. Couple horn beeps, and go. He was totally confident that I didn't have a chance....kept saying there was "no way" a 1200 could take an 1800, despite knowing that my Max puts out more HP, more torque, and weighs a good 200lbs less.

If I whacked the gas in 1st, the rear tire just instantly lit up and the ass started fishtailing like crazy, so I couldn't actually go WOT at the "third beep". His 260 rear tire took me there and he got a quick lead....my POS avon tire just couldn't hook up. However, by top of 2nd gear I was right back next to him, and when I hit third I walked away. I didn't go WOT until I hit third gear...with this rear tire going WOT in first or second just means instant burnout. The other interesting thing is that right as I had hit third, he was already in fourth at roughly the same speed. Right as I was really starting to haul in 3rd, he was fading having to go to 4th.

From a rolling start at 55(I was in third, I dunno about him), it was no contest, I handily pulled away, probably because I could actually use WOT without fishtailing like crazy.

Sooooo....I need a new tire. If I could hook up in even second gear(first would be great, but I'm not sure any tire is up to that job), I would have dusted him that much quicker. The 109 is no slouch for performance, but it's still a heavy v-twin cruiser

A quick search through back issues of Motorcycle Consumer News showed performance reports of 11.62/114 for the M109R and 11.09/121 for the VMax. Interpolation tells me that since 120 mph = 176 ft/sec, that half-second = a bunch of bike lengths. 8^)

Normally I'd be skeptical about the cut-rate Chinese tire, but I ran Kenda tires on my Magna without any issues, and the Shinko tour-masters seem to be a favorite among people here.

A Shinko rear tire is $70, the Metzeler is $160, the front tire is also about double the price for the Metz. For a set of tires, you're saving over $100. For that price, who cares if it wears out a bit sooner? You can buy two Shinkos for not even the price of one Metzeler. And from what I hear, the Shinkos are good for 8-9k miles, which is about all my friend with the 109 ever got out of his ME880s when he had the Shadow 1100.

Mr.Max ate the Shadow 1100 up faster than pizza at a weight watchers. OM NOM NOM gone. :rofl_200:
