How NOT to clean a bike chain

Sometimes you can do everything right and still get bit!! My bro-in-law is totally safety concious....ear protection, hard hat, back belt....you get the pic. A few years ago his snoblower chute plugged up, so he shut it off and attempted to poke the clog out with a piece of ax handle, or something. that didn't work and he shoved his hand thru to break it up, there was pre-load on the impeller and wham!! Half the index finger...gone!!

The last person in the world you would expect this to happen to!! :confused2:
 
I've noticed that a few times even when I'm using the plastic "shovel" thing that comes with them to unclog it a chunk will break loose and the impeller suddenly spins a bit from tension in the transmission. The plastic thing works pretty well unless it sucks up a stick, then I go get a long handsaw to stick in there to just cut it rather than stick my hand in there. Of course, the motor is off.
 
HOLY CRAP that had to hurt. The thought of touching a rag to a moving chain scares me let alone the thought of his hand going through it.
