Simple solutions are best! I wonder if Pam cooking spray might work for next time?
My buddy and I were out riding, he had an '86 ZX1000 w/a Superbike by Mike cyl. head & a D & D Exhaust, a 4/1. He got into the throttle pretty-hard leaving a light and the rear cap shot-off like a howitzer, no finding that! It was unbearably loud if you were on the right side of him or directly behind him.
Awhile later, the canister decided to divorce itself from the pipe, but that was easier to locate, I went back and after it cooled-down, I bungeed it to my seat. Still have it, pretty-short, haven't found a reason to use it on anything. I got a stock replacement from a local chrome shop who had distribution rights for D & D, I installed it for him, and he sold the bike shortly after. It had a great cammy top-end rush, but was no fun around town (w/or w/o the packing & end cap).
