Hi
Im a noob Vmax owner (1999 american import to the UK - acquired 2019) and not much of a mechanic but I thought it would be easy to set the idling. I've looked around online but nothing clear and carb setting etc seems to come up - is that really necessary or have i missed a handy dial setting somewhere (like on my thundercat)?

Should I be concerned that the revs dropped for no apparent reason?

Thanks
Mark

Add your geographic location below your screen name, from the post we see 'U.K.' but, where?

Buy a carb balancing tool, the analog dial gauges are easy to-use, not that-expensive, and the second time you synch your carbs will go much-faster than the first. Then the screw knob for setting the idle speed will work better for your idle adjustment. Inquire of your local Yamaha dealership their fee to perform this necessary work, and you will see that the tool can probably pay for itself in one or two uses.

Thanks for the advice on carb balancing

Here is the Generation 1 Factory Service manual online, courtesy of VMOA:

Be sure to read the front thoroughly as there are different versions of the manual as the years changed. The front has the yearly updates, so there are several different annual update title pages, with service and equipment changes noted.

I checked, you're halfway to the Isle of Wight. One of my friends living here in so. Florida is from Jersey. Those of you who think, "ah, he dropped the 'New' from New Jersey," no. He was in attendance at this one:
the isle of wight festival 1969

The bands:

  • The Band
  • Blodwyn Pig
  • Blonde On Blonde
  • Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band
  • Edgar Broughton Band
  • Joe Cocker
  • Aynsley Dunbar
  • Bob Dylan
  • Eclection
  • Family
  • Gary Farr
  • Fat Mattress
  • Julie Felix
  • Free
  • Gypsy
  • Richie Havens
  • Marsha Hunt and White Trash
  • Indo Jazz Fusions
  • Liverpool Scene
  • Mighty Baby
  • The Moody Blues
  • The Nice
  • Tom Paxton
  • Pentangle
  • The Pretty Things
  • Third Ear Band
  • The Who
Some list of performers! You 'young whippersnappers' may-not know that the U.K. rock band The Pretty Things released S.F. Sorrow, their concept album before The Who released Tommy. They never made it big here in the USA. Blodwyn Pig was started by Jethro Tull's first guitarist, Mick Abrahams, who left Jethro Tull because he wanted to play blues-oriented music, and Jethro Tull was headed elsewhere.
