Let my two dogs out last night. They each have there own lead, but one of the dogs is a lot less likely to wander off. I chained my heeler but the lab went out before I got him hooked up. No big deal. He stays close. Well don't I get a whiff of a skunk. I start calling the dogs to come in right away, but apparently not quick enough. My yellow lab got sprayed:bang head: Now it's 10:00 and I have a stinking dog, and its 12 degrees outside. It's to cold to leave him out, So I penned him in my computer room, but not before he had a chance to wipe his face on a chair trying to get the stench off. This all happened just before I was going to bed so I was not happy, and that is very much an understatement. So I figure everybody always said tomato juice, so I had to go to the all night grocery and get a few gallons. At first the lab kinda liked the juice. It was pretty tastey, but after a gallon and the scrubbing he got, I don't know as he felt the same way. It looked like a crime scene in my garage. Blood looking tomato juice every where. It was way to cold to wash him outside, so my garage took the hit. At first I didn't think of this but what does a dog do when his coat is soaking wet. He violently shakes it off, that's what. I now have tomato juice spray on the walls, snow blower, mower and yes, My Vmax. I did take the time last night to clean off the max. I let the tomato juice sit on him for about 15 minutes, then rinsed him with warm water. I didn't know tomato juice stained:confused2: So for now I have a pink yellow lab. I had some of that enzyime cleaner for pet odors, so I sprayed that everywhere the dog went. There's still a slight skunk odor, but better than I thought. I think the tomato juice came through. I'll be seeking out something in the febreez isle. After the fact I did a you tube search, and there was a different solution. They mix amounts of hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and baking soda. That's supposed to work better than tomato juice. That was my next step if I wasn't content with the juice. So by 12:30 The dog was washed, garage floor washed down, and the floor in the house mopped up. The pics are from this morning.

That sucks. Never had to scrub skunk spray off the dogs but, I'm no stranger to coon dirt. That's no fun either but, I'm sure not nearly as bad. I've done the garage bath with the dogs in the winter. No other option since the outdoor hose is frozen.

I have a 4' tall wood fence with a 2' tall lattice border capping it. Damn dogs ate a big hole through the lattice trying to get to the neighbors dog that runs around, taunting my dogs with his freedom.

My yard looks like a mud wrestling pit now that all the snow finally melted.

Don't forget to either thoroughly wash his collar separately, or replace it. It can carry an underlying, very faint, odor for months. Don't ask me how I know this.

Good advice, I had it off him ready to throw it out. Then I realized that's the only one I had to tie him out with. I'm gonna soak it.

I've read and used Dawn dish detergent the last two times my Rottie got sprayed. Of course I blamed the wife both times as she let the dog out into the fenced backyard unsupervised. Who do you suppose got the honor to scrub down the dog?!
I hate skunks. Oddly, my
Neighbor swears he loves the smell wafting through the air! Nuts I know!

Amazing how much time and love we all are willing to put into our dogs. Mans best friend.

Sometimes it can smell like a fresh pot of coffee but mostly smells just plain fricken rank..

It was obviously a skunk, but it didn't smell typical. It seemed more subdued. I've never really smelled a direct hit. Only the remnants in the air.Even when it first happened I was thinking it was different. I thought maybe it was an old or maybe young skunk. I also was thinking the 12 degree temps might have made a difference. He definately got it in the face. He kept drooling and rubbing his face on the ground (carpet):bang head:

I have heard that a gallon of water, a cup of hydrogen perxoide, a cup of baking soda, and few drops of dish soap (dawn) . Rub in throughly, rinse, repete.

My first Great dane got sprayed but his daughter got it worse but she killed the skunk!!!

This works!! I used a gallon of water 2 bottles of peroxide, 1/2 box of soda and a long squirt of dish soap. 99% smell gone instantly...

If you are ever in Asia and smell skunk... look out. No skunks there (at least not in Philippines) but Cobras have about the same stench.

Talked to a guy at work today. He said mean orange hand cleaner worked well for him. Anything that has citrus in it, works well.

Well, it's our turn now! 0400 dog goes out for her morning pee 'cept this morning she turned out to be the pee-ee instead of the pee-or! Big scuffle under the deck and then the most unbelievable odor I ever smelled....so now I'm just waiting for one of two things....take the easy way out and take her to the vet or groomers for the 'special skunk bath' or head to the Price Chopper when they open for some homegrown remedy.

Wifey decided to go to work a little early this morning....can't imagine why! :biglaugh:

Definitely a rough start to the day for you. I hope you can remedy the problem easily without too much retching and the like :barf:

Kind of got lucky, I called the vet, they didn't do the skunk bath thing but did have bottles of 'Skunk-Off' (which I'm sure is just peroxide, baking soda and a smidge of detergent) so I'm on my way thru town to grab some up and saw the groomer lady just opening her doors for the day....stop and ask her and sure enough she does the dog dunk so I dropped the doggie off.....she is now choking from the smell and I'm ******' off eating a plate of fresh fruit! :rofl_200:

Life is GOOD! :clapping:
