Ok, narrowed down to ignition. Ignition fuse? Next check pick up assembly at the connector near the battery. If the pick up assembly is good, I'd ask Sean for the electrical kit. Swap out the TCI/CDI depending on year. While waiting, with the ignition key on coil plugs should have battery voltage on one side.

I checked the fuses mark "fuse" next to the coolant reservoir. They're all good. Do you know the resitaresiof the pickup? It's the orange and black wires, no? I'm trying my best to keep up with the terms. Apologies if I sound like an idiot.

Something some people have done is to re-solder the connections in the ignition box where they attach to the printed circuitboard. That may or may-not help. If you suspect your ignition box is bad, it certainly isn't going to hurt, if you've done a diagnostic and suspect that the box has gone south, for one reason or another.

Sean has the Ignitech box, which has a lot of interfaces not available in the OEM ignition box, including you would now gain a rev-limiter function. I think he posted that he was mapping a new ignition software upgrade for it.

Not trying to sound completrlc stupid, but..here goes.. I keep hearing the name "Sean" I honestly have no idea who he is. A respected Vmax guru?

Not a stupid question.

Sean Morley of Morley's Muscle, see the banner ad at the top of the page, and also check out facebook if you do that.

Yes, the respected 'guru' of all-things VMax. He's free with his advice to help you. He knows sooner or later, you'll be getting parts and/or services from him.

Haha..thanks a lot, dude. For everything. Never really been a part of such a xommuncom. Pretty awesome.

Hey, dude! So I disconnected the pickup coil(black/orange cables under the seat) and set my multimeter to 200ohms and got back nothing. I even set it to 200k. I also have a function on my multimeter to check if there's any power and nothing. Think that's the ticket?

Sounds like a dead pick-up coil sensor. The stock replacement is $$$$. Forget it. Get one of the aftermarket ones, just make sure you get the correct one for the bike. 1985-1989 use two pick-up coils, the 1990-2007 use one pick-up coil.

When you say, "nothing," was it indicating an open circuit? No resistance reading? My meter says "OL" or "open loop" if there is no resistance from the electrical component which should produce some number value in the resistance (ohms) scale. Some possible help:

You might want to have on-hand an engine side case cover gasket, if the old one tears coming-off, when you remove the side case cover.

See my post... #4 There are FOUR pairs of wires from the pickup. Follow the primary instructions I copied from the Yamaha MANUAL. Then test with a HAIRDRYER as I detailed.

It does sound like it's bad for sure. I do have good used OEM on hand if you are interested. Email me at [email protected]
I'll definitely look into getting it from you if it's bad. Just trying to make sure that's what it is. Getting around using the resistance probes the right way. Not sure that I'm doing it right.

I found the two orange/black ones. Trying to follow them back to the pickup coil to get the others.

Thanks a lot! This is very, very helpful. I'm learning quite a bit from you and the others. I'm almost choked up. This is incredible. I'm following the orange/black wires to the pickup coil to make sure this is what's wrong. I'm excited! Not so much about the $$ I have to dish out but, I'm just happy I THINK I know what's wrong. I miss this damn bike!

1985-1989 VMax pick-up coils test.jpeg I believe the 1990-2007 ignition uses a single pick-up coil with orange and black, two leads one is orange, the other is black (VMX-12E wiring diagram, pp.16-17 http://www.vmaxguru.com/Tech/Gen1/Manuals/VMX12-Service-Manual.pdf ). The 1985-1989 ignition uses more leads because it has more pick-up coils. Refer to the 1985 manual wiring diagram for model VMX-12N, which has 5 wires from the pick-up coils.

Setting your VOM to ohms, to a low value, and reading between the orange and black should get you a value something around 100 ohms. If you get no reading, the pick-up coil is bad.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!! This is insane! I appreciate all of this. Yeah, I triple checked everything you've sent me. I'm getting no reading whatsoever.. looks like I'm buying a new pickup coil. Hopefully that's it and it has a long life and don't have to worry about that part anymore. Seems relatively easy to change out. Thanks again! If it matters, I'll definitely let you know how it goes!

Hey, dude. So I've got the new pickup coil and I'm about ready to install it. I'm having an issue. I didn't take a picture of the crankcase when I took it off the bike, and I don't recall the orientation of the clips. I just don't want to put it together incorrectly. Any indication on how I can? I tried looking through the PDF of the manual I downloaded but it doesn't really have that info on what I've got. Thanks again.

Send Sean Morley an email and he'll be a better source than me, it's been a long-time since I did mine, and I don't have a pic of it handy.

Thanks a lot!! You and Sean helped tremendously!! Gotta do some maintenance on her since she sat for so long. Valve cover gasket definitely needs to be changed and so does the fork seal. I need a damn garagr.
