A friend of mine in the UK is running a LiPo on his Gixxer 1k streetfighter (made for a bike, not made from R/C car parts). He's liking it, unfortunately the company that makes his battery is no longer making them (but still supporting those that have them).

I've been looking at other options. I have to tell you some of these puppies sound pretty damn good. 270 cold cranking amps (others have over 400) About 2.6" wide, 4" high and 5" long. not to mention the Weight; 2.5lbs.

Have to admit, some of them features sound pretty good.

Features:
  • Up to 80% smaller than the stock battery
  • Up to 10lbs Lighter than the stock battery
  • Service life of over twice a lead acid in similar conditions
  • Industry leading 3 year warranty
  • Designed, developed, and assembled in the USA
  • Hard mounted brass terminals for a direct replacement installation
  • Completely “dry” technology so batteries can be mounted in any direction
  • Non-toxic, and recyclable
  • Applications for powersports vehicles from 50cc - 1800cc
  • Tested extensively by professional race teams
  • Impact and water resistant
  • No special charger required
  • No trickle charger required, loses only 10% of charge over a year of static use

I sent Bill (owner/builder of Killacycle and Killajule) some email on the topic. It would be interesting on what the Doc, has to say about them.

Lithium Iron (Li Fe) not Li Po lithium polymer which is R/C hobby technology. LiFe is not risky or as delicate and not prone to fires from overcharging and physical damage. I think the performance is amazing. I mentioned in a revious post that full scale pilots can carry a spare battery for their planes in their flight bags or briefcases. And prices are not astronomical. I see car companies like MB or Volvo or maybe Cadillac giving these a try soon.

I had planned on going with one when the guys at the shop said my current battery was still good. They were going to sell it to me but didn't have it in. They mentioned that if the LiFe battery didn't crank not to worry. You have to wait a couple of secs after making the connection (pressing start) for the battery to warm itself up on extremely cold nights. The next start press will work fine. Have you experienced that?

there is a company that is called Shorai or sohey make something like that. They are very small and are half the weight. I have seen them on Ebay recently, and was able to see them in person in Denver a few months back. I want one but cannot justify getting one since mine is still working. I think they were $189 in Denver

I have a ballistic battery which is the same technology. It's great but it is true that on really cold nights it won't turn over the best until it warms up

Only 2.5 lbs....that's pretty wild. The Odyssey PC680 I have is listed as weighing 14lbs and change.

The first time I heard of the Shorai (sp?) batteries was at the Cycle World Motorcycle show in Dallas, year before last. They seemed too good to be true. More power, smaller and much less weight. Now they are getting common and haven't heard anything bad about them yet except they are very expensive. Wonder what the life expectancy is?

I have been looking at those Shorai batteries, mainly for the weight savings. Between that and a set up Supertrapp slip-ons I could shed a LOT of weight in short order from my Max.( On top of the 70 or so I dropped off the rider :) )

However, North Dakota is not known for being kind to auto/powersports batteries and I have heard not so great things about their cold cranking power (or lack thereof)

I have been running the Shorai Battery in my GenII for about 4 months, It works great!

How much did you pay. I have been seeing prices of about $180 for them.

I've been looking at the Shorai battery too.Not sure if they require a special charger to keep them up or if a standard trickle charger will work?
Best price I've found is here.

They can be charged with a regular battery charger as long as they are charged according to the manufacturer's guidelines. here are some interesting reviews and faq articles from batterystuff.com. I always order my batteries from these guys. Mostly because they have very good prices, the shipping is free and super fast.

Ignorant input: I replaced my stock battery with the Odyssey PC680 and it's done me great. If I wanted to lose a few pounds I should it off of me..... ha ha Weigh 225, should be about 205 maybe :)
