Also adding comments to this important thread rather than staring a new one.
After reading the comments on this topic, I was convinced my stock 06 might also be suffering from too high a float level; causing a rich running condition that produced a somewhat sluggish low and mid-range acceleration when the throttle was cracked. Didn?t think this was an issue since the bike had been this way day 1 from the Yamaha dealership and who questions the factory settings? ( Ya.. right)
With the help of information in this forum, used the wet method and found all float levels to be around the 12 ? 13 mm level (estimate from the 15 mm & 17 mm mark on the tube I used) Time to break-into the carbs for the first time to correct this !!! Buster?s sticky on removing the carbs / access the float bowls was very helpful.
Upon disassembly, all 4 floats were just as 2stangs69-91 stated: ?If you use the casting circle as a reference they were covering 3/4 to all of it.? Adjusted the floats to a dry float level to 1.125 inches, but for some reason this didn?t work for me; made the system too lean. (wet method level was well below the 17 mm mark on the tube.) After a couple float adjustments and a complete blow-out of all jets with air, the wet method levels ended up being : 17 mm / 17 mm / 16.5 mm / and 17 mm for all 4 carbs; within the specs of 15 mm ? 17 mm. To get these wet levels, I know the dry float levels ended up being < 1.025 inches. But remembering NaughtyG?s comments that ?wet level is what really matters? this is the final setting I went with. Synced the carbs, slapped on a helmet, and went for a spin.
Got to tell ya, in this thread Sean Morley said adjusting the float level to the proper specs ?It will make a lot of difference!? Sean is somewhat correct?.it made a HUGE difference in my case! I?m riding a totally different bike now; one that actually has low and mid range instant responsiveness at the crack of the throttle. WOW ?. the beast has awaken !
For those of you out there with 06 and 07 Gen I bikes, strongly recommend you read the stickys / threads in the carb section on checking the float levels using the wet method. If high (chances are they will be) there?s plenty of information here on how to remove the carbs and properly adjust the float levels, even if you?re mechanically challenged ! You and your VMax will be glad you did !
This is one modification that doesn?t require you to feed lots of $?s to the Mod Monkey !! Keep him happy and spend it for something really special ? like a new set of 4-2 Marks Pipes !!!
