Being a mechanic by trade I like to preform as much maintenance and repairs my self as possible, I will be purchacing a repair manual and would like to know which one you would recommend to a newby Max owner, my second question concerns which wind shield to purchace, I would like somthing larger than a flyscreen but not too tall, I ride with a half helment and eye protection and would like to keep the bugs out of my face, I'm looking for somthing that works well with the Max lines and looks good, any recomendations? pics would help if possible, my E-mail is [email protected] ..............Thanks.......Tom.

I have a used memphis shades shield (about the same as the mini III yamaha made - the medium sized one) for $50. I also sell Clymer manuals $35 for Vmax.

Not sure which Memphis Shades shield Sean has but I have 2 bikes with the M/S Classic Deuce, they work well and IMO look good too. Here's a pic.

BTW, $50 is a great price for a M/S shield!

I had purchased one offline on Ebay once that was the yamaha one. It was on disc and had every year on it. I cannot find it at this second, but it was awesome! pull up what you were looking for on the computer and print off the page and take it in the garage. I loved it.

Just got back into town with the Max tonight, my brother and I drove over there and checked it out in person, not as mint or perfect as described but still a very nice bike, I wanted to check the oil level and discovered no center stand, most of the time this would not be a problem but for changing fluids this to me is a must have, did a quick check on their internet and found one for $25 plus shipping, I was thinking of walking but decided to go for it anyway after looking it over again, he then comes out with a Clymers manual hands it to me, I figure that will help make up for the missing part, is removal of the stand a common thing for weight savings ? exhaust is stock, any thoughts?.............Thanks......Tom.

People remove the centerstand for two reasons usually:

- to save weight (it's kinda heavy)

- because they fit a 4-2-1 exhaust such as a Kerker. (not all perf exhausts make u lose it)

The real ***** about the Kerker is that it requires you to grind off the center stand mounts. So even though this bike has stock exhaust, crawl underneath to check it still has the mounting tabs with the holes!
And when you buy a center stand, makes also sure it comes with its mounting bolts.

Climbed under the bike this afternoon, looks like someone hacked off the mounting tabs sometime in the past, at this point I could ask the seller of the stand if the frame is still available to remove the tabs from and would they be willing to do so...................Wish me luck!

Isn't that a *****.. I have a frame with no title for sale that has the tabs still on it. Wouldn't be too easy to have them cut off, but I guess it could be done.

Otherwise, you can simply get a flat top jack and put it under the headers to work on it - they're strong enough to take the weight no probs.

I went out there and took another look, I think I'm just going to skip the center stand and like you suggested use my floor jack when I need the bike straight up, not the end of the world I guess and I can still get the job done, thanks for the input.....................Tom.
