Ok, I remember running a set of Kerker slipons on my old 1986 FZ750, they seemed at home on that bike, but Im wondering if they will be worth a damn on the Vmax? I found a vendor that sells them for $728 out the door. Any thoughts? I thought about a set I saw from Belgium, they look pretty cool, but the cost and time wait from Europe is daunting to me, especially if the exchange rate changes prior to shipping, and then they'll want more money. The Delkevics look funky to me, its like the pipes are dragging or the mounts broke. Holeshot? Maybe.
 
They will make some noise but do nothing for performance. No slip on helps the max.

If you're open to spending that much I'd buy a full system. Someone just posted a voodoo for $400. Be aware they are extremely loud. Plenty of other options though

I have not found any full systems that appeal to me, I like the dual cans, Holeshot made a set one time, have not seen one since.
 
I saw the special custom aftermarket website under the Exactrep site which says they have a distributor in the U.S. They listed several type pipes, the one that caught my interest is the Pro-Star 4/2. I do not like the cross over pipe on the slipons. For one, its a beoch to line up the pipes and connect the crossover, it would be easier to have all the pipes ultra loose and then fit it. Plus, I have not heard back from these people, before I order anything. not even a phone number available. Have to admit though, they do have some cool stuff for the Max. very pricy

I rcvd my Holeshots, 14", went on super easy, very nice workmanship, I applaud Dale, sounds real good, not raspy, low thunderous rumble, adjusted the screws to 2.5 front, 3.5 rear, kept the stock jetting, K&N filter, runs fine. Im happy with it.
 
I put a set of Delkevic slip ons on my '85. Amazing how such asimple mod changes the whole character of the bike.

I know I should post this excerpt under carbs, but since Im here now, pipes are great, Dale has had several designs since the late 90's, I had most of them on my vmaxes at one time or another, so, put some heat in the motor, bike ran smooth, ran it thru the rev range, boost etc, feels ok, it seems to be missing that little bit of oomph, on down shift, it slightly back fires, not bad mind you, but enough to notice, if I did nothing now to the carbs, it will run from here to D.C no problem. What would be the next step fellows to perhaps alleviate the slight burpping back fire? Im thinking it may be somewhat lean. any suggestions? The current setup is the Holeshots, K&N filter, mixture 2.5f / 3.5r. carbs are synchd.

Nice looking bike, and pipes. I'm thinking lean too. Make sure all boots are good, and tight,first. I'd suggest a stage 7, or Morley kit. There are other options too.

+1 Spark plug boots and airbox boots tight.
 
of course aforementioned are tite. I found the problem. The slip ons were not entirely seated as it appeared. Had to rubber hammer the beoches on, also noticed that the back two collector pipes are not as tite as they should be, I have some old ones from previous maxes which are in better shape than these, will re-seat and seal it up, After pounding on them with the hammer, took it for another spin, back fire gone, apparently sucking extra air. That little extra ommph is probably in need of a jet kit, needles, you know, the usual upgrade, which btw, we all know is an *** pain, so, for the time being, I'll suffer for awhile until I decide to do the up grade. thxs guys.
 
jetting the max *** pain part as we all know is: removing all the crap to get to them, breaking apart the rack that holds the carbs, do the mod, slap it all back together, run it, then find out you may have to chge the jets again or some other change, repeat and then cry. Ive been down that road x3 in my life with carb setups, try to do it rite the very 1st time. Hell, at least the slides are easy! BTW, I saw Marks Perf. setup, the full system 4/2, would you run the stage 7 or just use Morleys kit?
 
Carb removal on the max is easy compared to most bikes.

Pull the faux, airbox, scoops, left side electrical panel and that's it.

No need to split the rack to change main jets. Just remove the access plug on the float bowl.

I'm a fan of Sean's kit. Cheaper than Stg7. Similar top end. A bit better mid range (unless you want to experiment with custom intake tube lengths which might get it back) plus, Sean supports the forum.

I personally like Seans kit. It seems to be equal to a stage 7 kit, but with more midrange. Changing jets isnt hard. You can EASILY change jets and sync the carbs in an hour.

You slip the entire rack out the left side of the bike, and flip it upside down and set it back on the frame of the bike for easy access to the jets.

I never remove the left side electrical panel as my cables run above it so it is even easier.
