LED headlight conversion '99 Max

Since there were a couple of suggestions to improve light intensity and I wanted to both reduce power consumption as well as improve headlights; I want to present my solution.

I know there are easier solutions (LED bulbs) but they are NOT street legal in Europe and wont ever get homoligation, so they are more or less out of discussion for Europeans. For example, here in Austria (or Germany) police can even remove number plate immediately plus you will lose insurance cover in case of accident or even made responsible for accidents.

However, keeping esthetics of VMax plus improving light quality is not such an easy task here - and this is my solution.

I bought a PUIG (they also do windshields) LED headlight size 6 1/2" its China made but has full E-certification.

you can see, it fits 99%perfectly in place of the "old" headlights.

Since this product is offering also DRL, I found a very smart solution to control the lights in modern way:


this little thingi is a great solution to follow EC regulations:
it contains a light sensor...

so the function (youtube video will be made soon) works like this: as long as the sensor detects normal light condition DRL only is working, as soon as light intensity drops (fog, sunset, tunnel) it immidiately dimms the DRL and normal lights go on. In case you ride out of the tunnel and light intensity rises - the healight goes off and DRL works back to 100%.

Light intensity can be set in 30 different levels, Dimm-rate can be set. DRL works as a parking light, too and is connected instead of the position lights.

Power consumption: DRL: 4 W ; headlights 9W or 12W.

Following this route I can achieve lowest power consumption, maximum safety and for sure remain road legal. Side effect: cheapest solution. Planning a short video showing functions soon.

The Philips Ultinon Pro6000 H4-LED is legal in Europe. It has been since November of 2021.

with all due respect, but please dont distribute terribly wrong information.

This LED bulb is legal for some (very few) cars and for none (=z e r o) motorcycle. I do not want to appear inpolite and pay you a beer, if you would pass a 08/15 police control with this bulb in a n y motorcycle, without losing your license plate and a fine which would wake you up.
Moving a vehicle without legal permission is not a cheap offence here it would include a nice meeting before court and waiting for your license plate for months (in some countries).

Maybe not in whatever nation you live in, but in most places they are. Germany and Austria approved them last year and France did the beginning of this year if memory serves. I had assumed that would make them legal in most of the EU.

Well, I am not going to fight for that.
But read what you quote: they talk about cars. A motorbike is not a car. And each car, each kind of headlight (reflector) has to be approved seperately. This might help you understanding why elder cars and bikes will always be excluded. In total, for example, maybe far less than 10% of all cars registered and could enjoy this privilege.

This is why they have a site where you can check if your vehicle is permitted to use these certainly great LED bulbs. But there is zero motorbike. Because its simply too expensive for too little numbers. Even the very popular Vespa 300GTS or Yamaha T-Max wont be found. Not even Vespa/Piaggio or Yamaha would be found. I doublechecked it weeks before I bought the PUIG headlight. And I re-checked right now.

To your information: Osram was the first company coming up with permission to use their bulbs in some selected cars. Motorbike? none. unfortunately.

However, if you want to win - I give up and pay all respect to you. Just dont try your luck with one of this bulbs in a motorbike on public roads. On private roads or racetracks, no problem anywhere in Europe.
I am living in Austria, on the border to Germany - kindly understand that I have my own, expensive experiences.

Sounds like a vested interest in the product ?
As for regulations in the UK. I defy anyone to know what they are broadly, let alone relating to vehicle lights. Equally, we don't have the degree of traffic monitoring as in places like Germany. Result is that the LED light issue can be confusing.
Personally, my existing LED headlight bulbs have done a good job for some time, including praise from the annual vehicle inspections.

"From 22 March 2021, we’re changing these rules so that not all motorcycles and vehicles will fail the MOT test if their halogen headlamp units have been converted to be used with HID or LED bulbs."

Since I was working in FL a couple of years ago, I can easily imagine that our local regulations will sound strange to our American friends. Even to Southern EC countries...
German motorcyclists pay for their "no-speed limit" freedom, Austrian and Swiss bikers pay for their unique environment and great mountain roads with a total lack of freedom to tailorize our rides.

Offtopic: 2 yrs ago we were stopped by police on a mountain road, they checked each and every single bike (4 police guys). Came up with laptop and internet, checking the homoligation of each bike and writing out fines. Friend of mine, riding a KTM 1250 super duke had to remove his registration plate and sit on the back of my Myroad 700 for the way back home.
Had to come with a trailer and pick up the bike, remove everything that he modded and get the bike (on the trailer again) to the traffic section of hsi federal state. Passed there, he had to go and pick up the registration.

The fine he had to pay was a heavy 4-digit amount.

This can always happen here, and a standing light bulb could be the reason - if the police is in the wrong mood.

Exactly. for some, few cars. Less than 10% of those on the roads. Osram offers more permissions. Chinese LED's none.

since reflectors and headlights are different, it will never be E-marked. Not within the next 5 years at least, then there is a new regulation in planning stage.

Remember: not knowing about a law wont protect the rider/driver.
