Paid a deposit and picking up a 2009 with 30k in a few weeks, I'm a previous Gen1 owner and from searching the forums, seems like the Gen2 bikes are really well sorted out; I'm having to adjust my mindset since the Gen1 needed a lot of work to make it reliable (crimp fix, coil on plugs, rectifier). I plan to ride it for 100-200 miles to get a baseline feel, then do standard maintenance, please advise if there is anything missing from this list you'd recommend:
  • Oil and filter change
  • Brake and clutch fluid flush
  • Radiator flush
  • New spark plugs
  • New Battery
  • New Air Filter, remove airbox restriction
  • Depending on visual inspection, new tires and brake pads
The only problems I noted were oil pump and clutch slip concerns. Oil pump, looks like this was a recall from the early years, I assume I need to contact a dealer to determine if the work was done. Anyone have a different suggestion I should be aware of?

Clutch slip seems to be what happens when you use Yamalube/don't use yamalube/use synthetic/don't use synthetic. I'm slightly concerned about doing an oil change and creating a problem, seemed like there is no consensus on recommended fluid. The bike has a thundermax exhaust but is otherwise stock (performance wise) from initial inspection, so jsut expecting to complete the maintenance and see what happens.

Any other recommendations from the seasoned Gen2 riders out there?

Looks like you have a good list together. Not to stir up the oil debate, but in my personal experience, I have been using the AP yamalube that is recommended. My main reason is because Yamaha offers a 20yr/100,000 mile motor warranty if the regular maintenance is done with the yamalube spec. from the start. Having said that, I haven’t had any trouble using the yamalube. I have the mab, Nash flash, and Hindle exhaust.

I've got an '09 also and need to verify with the local dealer if the oil pump recall has been done, based upon my searching it has not.

And, if I am not mistaken, Tim Nash and a few others have recommended using the Mobil 1 4T 10W-40. After 16 years there's no need to worry about using Yamalube to maintain a warranty.

There has only been 1 person that ever had a clutch slip, that was not related due to HP/worn clutches, and was fixed by going to the DD mod. This person, had rivets that weren't peened well on the clutch basket, allowing the basket to loosen allowing the clutch slip to happen.

On the gen 1 dino oil vs synthetic is is important. on the gen 2, not so much. I use the mobil 1 4T that Tim Nash recommends, with no issues. I do run the DD mod as well.
