This guy is finally getting the recognition he deserves:

He was on my college wrestling team a year ahead of me. A true American hero.

Private First Class James McCloughan, a native and current resident of South Haven, served as a medic and saved the lives of 10 members of his platoon wounded during the Battle of Nui Yon Hill on May 13-15, 1969, according to a news release from U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters and U.S. Rep. Fred Upton.

McCloughan, who was discharged with the rank of Specialist (SP5), was highly decorated. He received the Combat Medical Badge, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, the U. S. Army Valorous Unit Citation, the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the M16 Expert Rifle Badge.

From my wrestling alumni newsletter:
James McCloughan graduated from Olivet College in 1968 and was later inducted into the Olivet College Hall of Fame in 1978. During his time as a Comet, McCloughan served as a team captain during his junior and senior year, won MIAA championships, and was voted Most Valuable Wrestler by his peers. While all of Jim's wrestling accomplishments are outstanding, especially for an individual who did not wrestle prior to enrolling at Olivet College.

Following graduation from Olivet College, Jim offered his service to the United States Military while fulfilling his duty as a medic in the Vietnam conflict. Flash forward 47 years and James McCloughan is on the verge of receiving the nation's highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for saving the lives of 10 members of his platoon during the Battle of Nui Yon Hill. This recognition will add to his already impressive decorations including the Combat Medical Badge, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, and more.

Thank you Mr. McCloughan for your service and for your remarkable bravery!
