I saw some sights far-worse than the computer desk when doing "welfare checks" at the request of out-of-state relatives while on fire-rescue. Hoarders in some of the most disgusting things you can imagine.
One guy had a roof leak because he had a 2'x2' hole where the rats used to run across his roof & come & go. The neighbors videotaped the rats who liked to make their move @ dusk, then they showed it to the Build. Dept. We went out w/a warrant to force entry if the resident wouldn't allow us access. He had been putting newspapers down on the floor to walk-on when the 55 gal. drum he had under the hole in his bedroom ceiling overfilled. Over time he had about 4" of always-wet newspapers turned to paper m?ch? muck and you had to turn sideways to get between the stacks of newspapers & magazines stacked & tied w/twine, 5' high, throughout the house. I was in my turnout gear & boots so it didn't bother me much, but it was a waste of a nice 4 b.r., 2 car garage home. He was taken away under Baker Act. When I was in the garage, what was hiding under a bunch of crap piled around & on-top of it? A tagged, Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow probably 20-25 years old!
I have other hoarder stories. Sad people, probably mentally-ill.
