Is this another example of how the legislators are so completely out of touch with reality? (It's no different in the UK). :teeth angry:

I'm all for freedom if it doesn't impact on other individuals or society in general but there are times when people need to be protected from themselves.
I'm assuming that as no-one plans to have an accident therefore have little or no choice as to which parts of their body get hurt - why would you allow folk to ride without crash helmets?

I also fail to understand how $20000 would cover the worst case scenario, i.e. brain damage or persistent vegetative state or help the poor sods who have to pick-up the pieces and have to live with caring for someone for the rest of their lives.:angry flame:

On the other hand our 'leaders' are quite happy to reduce the number of traffic police and substitute them with speed cameras which in the majority of situations has little to do with preventing accidents and everything to do with raising revenue!
:ranting:
Come the revolution I know who I will have against the wall first. :gun shoot:

Rant over. :rofl_200::wave bye:

It's official, as of today you are no longer required to ware a helmet in Michigan if you meet certain criteria . Thanks for the offer but I will still use mine.

Oh look, another state that has decided to do death by choice! I personally will always wear mine since I value my life.

Gov. Snyder signed the bill to get tourist dollars.

He thinks because of no helmets tons of bikers will then flock to Michigan to ride along our lakes and the UP.

Snyder is an asshole but so was Granholm. There is already a slew of riders only wearing DO-RAGS here in Mi. So cool.:ummm:

What fuc#ing Snyder should do is fix our insurance rates so they are not the highest in the U.S. But then again the insurance companies have had Michigan Pols in their pockets for over 40 years now.:bang head:

My thinking changed from the bandana only days in RI. Something to maybe hold what's left together?
I hate to say it, but laws need to be passed to protect the stupid. No texting on Ma roads anymore, though I still see it.
Cape Cod is the land of the speeding, lost, not looking, cager, already. I wear all I can. Kind of like a life preserver being the law in a boat. People wouln't bring them without the law. How awful to find out they couldn't swim and didn't wear it?

Or building a luxury liner, and leaving port with only enough lifeboats for half the passengers and crew. 100 years ago, tonight, about 9p.m.!

I left MI forty years ago as a young man after college, and headed to the land of bikinis, se?oritas, strong coffee, and year-round biking!

No helmet law here, saw many patients waiting to be transported to the E.R., some w/o helmets and some didn't need a trip to the E.R., just a trip to see someone like Quincy.

Many moons ago my son was into this question. I put a helmet on him ( not a perfect fit) and gave it a smack with a hammer handle. He said ouch that's loud. Then I took off the helmet and went to give him a rap on the head----- of course he said whoa and has never ridded without a helmet since. He lives in Az, with minimal helmet laws.

I guess it's freedom of choice but I would rather see helmeted motorcycle riders, belted up cagers, and nobody ( not NOBODY) using a cell phone.

I rode my Max from Ohio to MI way back when and when I got to Ann Arbor, took off my helmet and wasn't long before local PoPo stopped me and asked why my sissy bar was wesring my helmet. I explained Ohio's law and he let me go with my
bucket on. I chastise my sister in law when she asks to wear shorts and flip
Flops on back of the bike. No way am I going to look for her little piggies along the roadside.

And he's absolutely right. We've run into bikers while riding in NH, started talking about where they ride, if they'd ever been to some spot in NY. "Oh, we don't ride in NY, you have to wear a stupid helmet there". I guess these guys were too bad-ass for even the "novelty" beanies. Of course they were all on hardly driveables, none of them had a single bug splatter despite being the middle of summer, and their protective ensemble comprised of a $400 pair of Oakleys, a HD dealer t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. For all I know they trailered their bikes to that gas station just to sit and pose.

I'm all for getting rid of helmet laws. Insurance gives better rates to those who do wear helmets, and people riding bikes are big boys, they're old enough to understand the consequences of your head hitting asphalt. If they get more enjoyment from riding w/o a lid, then by all means.

I agree 100% with you Chuck.... even though we now have a choise, I'm still wearing my helmet; even if it's a quick trip around the block.

I fully understand the "I don't want to be told what I can and can't do" mindset. I feel the same about most things in life. That being said, YOU WILL NEVER SEE ME RIDING WITHOUT A HELMET. And I mean a real helmet, not some poser beanie.

That's great Lew, more kids should get the same graphic demonstration! I always explain to my buddies who ask me if my full face helmet, leather/ armoured jacket, armoured gloves and riding boots get hot and I say hell yes! Then I say that I look at it this way, get into thae back of a pickup and have someone drive you up to about 35 mph and jump out. Then ask them what kind of gear they would want to be wearing, the potato chip helmet/ vest with wife beater t's wearers normally go quiet, The proper gear wearers agree with sweating over road rash bleeding and/ or worse.

Unfortunately, due to medical adavances, the only form of natural selection we have nowadays is stupidity.........

I have ridden without a helmet in the UK on private land and then only an max of about 15mph, even that felt wrong....

I don't think its fair to say someone is "stupid" for not wearing a helmet. Its a choice and many American lives have been sacrificed to keep it that way. Sometimes I wear mine, and sometimes I don't. I think it depends on HOW you ride and WHERE you ride. Would I ride into a major city without a helmet? No. Would I go 100mph without a helmet? No. I ride my bike in rural areas with zero traffic and within my riding abilities. When I rode my CBR, I wore the helmet every time because I knew I would be ripping on it. Just like boating without WEARING a life jacket......it doesn't do you any good unless you have it on, right?
