Just seeing how many of you mis from second to third. I seem to do this a lot. Last night i did and then put it in and was not in properly and kind of jolted me, was weird. Not sure why I struggle with it

Probably need to try adjusting the linkage first. Then if it still won't go then you could have the early stages of gear engagement dog wear or bent shift fork.

Depending on the year (98 and older) they had problems with the pins in the gear segment. That would be a fairly simple fix if so. I see yours is a 2003 so this shouldn't be the case.

I have this issue with my '85. Aslight "crunch" into gear when the engine is hot as well.

What's the fix Sean?

Yikes lets definitely hope its not that. Sec gear probs suck!
Just a thought but could the joint under the rubber boots on the shift linkage be dry? I had a tough time finding neutral a few years back, I changed oils, adjusted the link...Nothing would help then I took the linkage apart, cleaned and lubricated it with lithium grease...Bam! problem solved.

They will clunk into gear from nuetral and be worse if the idle is high. Check everything external first because after that you are getting into the engine to fix it.

This only happens when i am not paying attention to me any way so do not think there is anything wrong. Only happened a few times and the jolt I am sure was my fault. The gear shifter is kinda high above my foot so I need to adjust it I think.

I sometimes find it hard to get neutral but not as it is hard, I just keep missing it. Also it does crunch into first from neutral but only if I have the choke on at above 2 grand revs.

This sound like problems? I did not even think I had an issue, just assumed it was me.

my 06 does it from time to time also. I have changed my riding boots I am hoping that will help the problem since it happens way more frequintly in my larger boots than my tennis shoes.. I also just swaped oil brands. It has done this since it was pretty new.

I am the exact opposite. Happens only in my tennis shoes, when I have my steel toe work shoes on I never miss. Like I said I think it is a matter of adjusting the shifter for me

Adjust the shifter with the linkage bar. I like mine a little downward so I can really pull it in without having to rotate my foot too high (try seeing just how little your foot can pivot up from the floor with your legs just under you. Note that the jam nuts are threaded differently so that one turns opposite of the other allowing you to open or close the gap up thereby adjusting the shifter height.

Higher rpm's will make it clunk/crunch/bang/pop since the dogs hit harder. Make sure to let off the throttle/choke to bring the RPM down when putting it in gear so you can avoid excess wear. I don't mind selling you an undercut trans but you can delay the work a lot longer with a little care.

I miss second every so often on hard(stoplight drag) launches. It will catch and hold for maybe a second, then pop back into neutral. My Honda did this too. Happens maybe 1 in 20 times, and only on super hard launches so I think it's probably my foot that causes the miss. It never pops out if I use the clutch, but it's not so much a launch if you pause to clutch.

Finding neutral seems to vary. Sometimes it is really easy, and then for a few times the shifter feels really "stiff" when trying to find it and it takes me a bit of fumbling to get it. Then it will be fine again at the next stop. My guess is varying engine temperatures?

yea i've missed 2nd a few times. happens when i'm like going 75% out, and i'm not paying a100% attention. i'd agree, just adjust your linkage. u'd really have to **** up the dogs on an 03 to need that work

also, to find neutral, it sucks. blip the engine before u try, that works 99% of the time. 100% on the second blip.
