Model Year Differences: Pre-'96/Post-'96??

I hope this hasn't been covered already too much and I did a wide search already, but didn't come up with much really. I know of a few differences between the early bikes and the later bikes as a whole, (color, wheels, etc.) but I don't know when "updated parts" were implemented and for what years they began using them. What are the "good years" break-points, etc.? If it's a dupe, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks Mark, that's what I was looking for.

Going from that information, it appears as if the 1993-up bikes are the ones to have if one has a choice due to the mechanical improvements over the 1992-down bikes huh?

Also, since I have a 1995, can I purchase the factory parts from Yamaha to convert my cartridge-style oil filter to the later spin-on style oil filter by way of an equipment upgrade/change?

Yep, better forks and brakes. Plus the ignition is improved. In '96, you get a better rectifier/regulator for more reliable charging.

You'll need a late model cross brace and a spin on oil filter kit to convert to late model oil filter. I believe cycleoneoff.com does a kit....not sure who else. Perhaps boxenstopp.us.

My first dirt bike was a CR500. Guess I just like speed.
