Hey folks:

Reviving this thread a bit, but I'm having a similar issue with my '89...

I have an Odyssey 680 battery in my Max, and I frequently keep it on the Battery Tender just to keep it fully charged.

Well, I did the shotgun carb clean yesterday, but after re-assembly, I tried to start the bike, and the starter motor turned slowly for a few seconds, then I RAN OUT OF BATTERY POWER! So, I charged the battery again, re-tried to start the bike, and same issue!

Is this battery a piece of crap??? I had one on my 2001 Max in the past, with no such problems. Should I buy a new battery?

Anyway, I wanna jumpstart the Max from a definitely good battery from another bike. Could someone here outline the procedure to do this for me? I'd much appreciate it!

Thanks very much!

Jump it from a car, battery charger with boost, or another bike. Just like jumping a car. Hook the positive cable first then the ground. Positive cable can attach to the wire coming from the battery to the Solenoid (red wire - not the black wire going to the starter) and then the ground to the frame in the right side of the bike where you can see some other ground wires going to.

Thanks, Sean! Forgive my ignorance...what does the solenoid look like, or what does it do?

It is a small round device sitting right over the battery (under the main front seat). It will have one larger black wire running from it to the starter, one larger red wire running to the positive side of the battery, and one small blue wire (or pair or wires) that run to the start switch (through relays and misc crap).

It is a switch that when a small amount of voltage is supplied to it (from the small blue wire from your start button) internally connects the main wire from the battery to the Main wire going down to your starter.

On this bike the starter is engaged all the time and the only thing keeping it from turning all the time is the starter clutch. On a car the starters usually use a solenoid that also engages the turning of the starter but also drives an engagement head out to contact the flywheel teeth.

You can actually jump start the bike with the key on by using a jumper (screwdriver) to cross the two big terminals. This actually works well when doing a compression test so you don't have to worry about spark to the system.
