Hey all, I'm a new VMax owner from central NY. I've been on the forum for a while but finally decided to join. I've been riding a few years and happened to find a nice 'Max on Craigslist this past winter. Had to go through the process of cleaning carbs and replacing seals, and the slave cylinder. You know, the works. Got it back from the shop a couple weeks ago and just went on her break in ride up to mid coast Maine. I've had several bikes since learning to ride but HOLY ****, this thing is a rocket ship. Not the most comfortable thing I've ridden but I've got the Corbin seat to help out. Only problem is it doesn't fit with the sissy bar, so no long trips with that seat unfortunately. Anyway glad to be here and looking forward to more adventures.

Here's the "Grand Touring" set up 😂

Welcome to the forum.

My '92 has an OEM accessory sissy bar and a Corbin seat, the seat fits perfectly.

I suspect that you aren't hitting any triple-digits on the speedo with a bar-mounted windscreen. They make the bike's handling less-than optimal.

I think I hit about 105 (allegedly) 😉, before the windscreen started to get pushed downwards by the force of the wind. That's why I opted for an easy on easy off, just unscrew the two bolts and she's good for touring or street racing. Altho nothing kills my speed like the awful cobra pipes I've got on her. Those will be the next things to go. I'm looking to get the star rider street pro 4-2, the slash cut version is really the only look that I've fallen in love with out of all the after market systems.

Watching movies on the screen? 🤨
Thats pretty crazy entertainment system you rigged on it 🤷🏻‍♂️
Me personally would have just got a Gold Wing instead or both but hey welcome to the party… Some say I am crazy for putting a trailer on my VMAX 😅

Believe it or not I was actually scrolling through craigslist looking for a Goldwing when I first laid eyes on a VMAX. I had no idea what it was but thought it was the coolest looking bike I'd ever seen. After a 10 minute YouTube video I knew I needed one. The rest is history. I like the trailer setup. Definitely not something you see everyday. 👍

So I’m using a Yamaha branded shield ….mounts to the upper fork tube pinch bolt.

I also added this comm

installed it in my helmet and Bluetoothed it to my phone…..music, GPS directions and even communication to another helmet is ya want. 👍🏻

I'd say that a bar-mount windshield is a good speed limiter. Anything after triple digits for a tall and/or wide windscreen will cause much handling instability. The 'flyscreen' that Yamaha sold specifically for the Gen. 1 VMax has much-less of an effect upon the bike's handling.

I noticed that it didn't respond as quickly to throttle, almost like it was weighed down. That's probably a main cause. This is the factory shield that came with my '02 Shadow 1100, I use that for distance rides most of the time.

Yeah someone at work recommended a VMAX for my first bike and it was love at first research… The more I read about it or watched videos, I just had to have one 🫡
The old racing locksmith at my facility recommended it but everyone else said I would kill myself on it 😅.
He’s quoted “Just keep the rpm low while you’re breaking her in or I mean she is breaking you in snd you will be fine”… 5k plus miles later and still haven’t had any incidents… I have a feeling it will be someone who will hit me from behind at stop light or something like that *foresight feeling* 🤷🏻‍♂️

I know what you mean, here in NY lane filtering is still illegal so every stop light/sign I'm hugging that centerline hoping to God the person behind me isn't on there phone. I always say that if everyone drove a motorcycle then accidents due to inattentiveness would disappear over night. Makes me think of India, with 8 lanes of bikes on a two way road 😂
