GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A Greenwood police officer has been suspended, accused of drunkenly arguing with a man who confronted him about leaving a baby in his vehicle, police said.Officer Nick Dine was off duty on the evening of Oct. 29 when a man said he watched him leave a baby unattended in his personal vehicle outside the Applebee's Restaurant at 874 S. State Road 135.Dine went into the restaurant, then came back out and went next door to the O'Charley's Restaurant, returning to his vehicle within five minutes, the man said. That's when the man said he confronted Dine about leaving the baby in the car and threatened to call police.Dine responded, "I am the police," flashing his badge at the man, and then removed a firearm from an ankle holster and put it in his back pocket, the man said. The man also told police that Dine asked him and the people he was with if they were rednecks and if they lived in a trailer. When police arrived at the parking lot, Sgt. James Ison said he smelled the odor of alcohol on Dine and asked him to submit to a portable breath test.Police said Dine refused to take a test at the scene and again when he was taken back to the police station. An internal police investigation found that Dine violated city rules and department policies, including conduct unbecoming of an officer, making derogatory remarks and substance abuse.Dine was placed on unpaid leave Monday. He will appear before the Greenwood Merit Commission, which will decide on disciplinary measures.
