I have a 1992 VMax. I had let set up due to moving, xwife, new family, new house, new job the normal things in life. Well I have gotten the time and space now to do the work. I noticed while I had my carbs off looking down the intake, there was a lot of carbon build up on my intake and valves exhaust side is the same. So I decided it is time to tear down and rebuild, and some fresh paint. I am not in any rush to finish before summer. I am doing the work myself and am assisted by my 6 year old daughter. I am on a small budget. So here are my questions.

1 Where are you guys getting gasket kits at?
2 While apart is there anything you would recomend doing?
3 Should I repaint the frame while I am so close to being stripped down?
4 Port and Polish balance the pistons and rods, worth the time?
5 Is there clearance to mill heads, or not worth it?

Thanks guys

If it was running good when you parked it get it running & check it out.
Carbon buildup is not desireable, but it happens.More fun to blow it out with reckless behavior.

If you are on a small budget I would not open her up. Unless the engine is knocking or seized there is no reason to rebuild it, unless you want more power. If you really want more power or a different engine I suggest you contact Sean Morley (link at top of site) first. A 1300cc conversion with your existing top end should work fine.

Gasket set: Factory. Contact Gary McCoy at Modak Motors. Say you are with the Vmax forum for great discount.

While its apart: Tend to orange o-ring on buttom of engine. It tends to pop out causing low oil pressure. Several fixes, do search of forum. Also inspect tranny. Early models had problems, but was supposed to be resolved with later versions.

Repaint frame?: No, unless you completely strip the frame down to bare. Then its better to powdercoat.

Port/Polish/Balance: What are you looking for? Most of those will give you fairly low gains per dollar spent. Want a drag queen, buy a more powerful inline 4 bike to have fun with.

Mill heads: Unless they need it, why do it? Max runs fine on 87 octane now. Higher compression = a little more power = much more pain at the pump due to premium fuel.

All are just my opinion. The Max is awesome, but with great HP comes great money. You stated that you are on a smaller budget, and the cost of an engine rebuild/improvement can easily cost much more than your scoot is worth money wise. Price EVERYTHING out and plan exactly what you want to do before starting to tear into it.

As they said if it isn't smoking or down on compression don't tear it down unless you want performance. If you do get the trans undercut and if it is an older bike replace the pin retainer on the end of the shift drum. I would either mill block to get a better squish band, which will increase performance and reduce chance or pinging, or get a thinner headgasket. Milling I feel is the better option as you can keep a thicker headgasket which is less prome to leaking.
All in all the 1300 from sean probably has all this plus 100cc's could be the way to go.
