I feel sorry for those guys, No corn sqeezin's up here. They tried many years ago, but the climate dosn't agree with it, so they axed it. Haven't seen it offered since. :clapping:
Lucky dog! My main fuel stop has 87/ 89/ 92 and does not have e-10/ ethanol in it. If I do run into it I have used midgrade that does not have ethanol in it.
I only have 2 gas stations within 15 miles of home so if they start adding it I'll have to buy it in gas cans at the Shell station 20 miles from me to keep for home fillups.

look at the sticker underneath your lid. it'll tell you the octance that yamaha had as a reference when they designed their motor to be able to claim the hp and torque numbers that they published. sure they didn't envision corn drippings would be squeezed in the mix, but run some "fuel cleaner" if you are so inclined every so whenever.

While scraping off the stupid warning sticker, I noticed on the underside sticker it says "Fuel: all gasoline 91 RON min." Does this mean I should be using 91??

Mine says the same.

Research Octane Number

  • Regular (86-87 octane) gasoline in the US carries a 91-92 RON
  • Mid-grade (89-90 octane) in the US carries a 94-95 RON
  • Premium (90-94 octane) in the US carries a 95-99 RON

You da MAN! thank you very much :worthy:

The stuff don't like the winters, so instead of the bother of pumping it in the summer and not the winter, it was more cost effective and maintenance smart to just keep things as they were. The last time I checked, you won't find a corn station in the state. :biglaugh: Which I find a little weird, cause in the southeast portion of the state, the weather isn't that much different than Washington, I would figure they would at least try and hock it there being that some communities barge their fuel in from the lower 48.

Well thank you all for the opinions...I guess I opened a can of worms on this topic. lol I am going to try a tank or more of 87 octane and see for myself. Thanks again to all of you on this fantastic site!

LOL, it's more like "reopened". hahahaha. search the forum for the discussions on oil and spark plugs:rofl_200:

No problem with that. I almost let Acetone slip out of my key board. Now that would have opened a huge can of worms.

I didn't even mention Toluene!

And thanks KJ for clearing up the American octane/RON difference... again! :biglaugh:

After taking a look at the intake valves on a Max that the guy swore by premium gas and seeing enough carbon on them to make me wonder how they closed properly I have sworn off the stuff.

I have noticed this with people who "swear by" using premium gas in 2 stroke snowmobile engines(that do not specifically require it). HUGE carbon buildup in the ports, pistons, exhaust gates, ect. They have to pull and clean the exhaust gates every few rides since they're already sticking from deposits, while people who run 87 go years without having to clean them.

There's a simple explanation. Octane *******/slows combustion, makes the fuel more resistant to pressure-ignition. In a "regular" engine, this octane just slows the burn/explosion over a longer time period, generating less heat. People like to say "premium burns cooler" as a justification for putting it in everything from cars to weedeaters. This is true, but it's NOT a benefit. Engines are designed to run at a certain temperature to be self-cleaning....deposits are continually burned off. Lower that temperature and the self-cleaning action is being defeated, and buildup occurs.

The other reason "it runs smoother" is because there's less vibration from less piston acceleration and less power.

North America uses the r+m/2 rating, or the average of the RON and MON. Most other countries use on the the RON, which is around 4 points higher than our ratings. So 87 here = 91 elsewhere.

I just filled up on a tank of gas on my recent ride to Oklahoma where unlike Tx theres no ethanol crap added to it.
My observations .
bike ran cooler.
Started up better.
Fuel light came on at 120 miles on the trip ie 12 more miles for the tank full for my riding style.

I only use 87 as recommended by the manufacturer.

soooo cam 2 or 110 octane or aka racing fuel wouldn't be a good idea in a stock max engine?? without ethanol i must add that, lol.

I only run 100 octane in mine when I'm making nitrous passes... Really makes the bike run like ass on the motor though.. I run premium usually but now that I have a quick drain valve on there I'm going to take some 87, 89 (non ethanol) and premium 92 and try them all and see if there's any difference in et or mph, no sense paying a bunch more if it's not aiding performance any..

The ONLY difference between 87 and 93 is octane rating which is a more resistant to knock. In other words it burns slower and not as efficient as lower octane does.

So with that said, if you can run 87 and not have problem, that will be your best fuel to use. If you have knock or dieseling after run on etc, then step up to the next highest octane until it disappears.

Running higher octane will usually make the engine more sluggish and produce less power. Running race fuel through your bike will do nothing except slow you down. Having power adders such as nitrous can also make cylinder pressure spike and thus using race fuel can be helpful to keep that detonation factor out of play.

But in general running the lowest octane fuel the bike will properly run, is where you will make the most power.

Been there ran dyno's to prove it ;)

I keep a gas supply here so I don't have to run out just to fill a bike or the boat and on occasion a truck. I run 93 Octane, Non Ethanol only, because some of my toys run like crap on regular and on ethanol. I don't want to grab the wrong can and screw something up.

I just bought an 86 and I have not had time to do everything to it as far as tuning goes but I think it is in fair shape. I know the plugs are great and the guy I bought it from said he had the carbs done. I've not yet checked the sync but I've tried regular 87 and it just does not run as smoothly and certainly does not idle as smoothly. It runs better, gets better mileage, and idles a lot better with 93. has 18k miles so it has been sitting around unused a lot. The more I ride it the better it gets in general.
