This problem I have been dealing with a while now. Cleaned the carbs a couple of times with the shotgun and work for 20 miles are so did the peashotter and the bike ran good for a short time. Last couple of time it ran like crap and I couldnt even get it to run for a short time. Well I bought some k&n pod filters about two years ago and finally decided that I was gonna get the exhaust and jet kit and clean the carbs real good and the enjoy my bike. Well wrong answer it is still running bad. Got the main air correctors in 150 mikuni jet stage 7 needle. Tried stock slide spring and the stage 7 tried the 150 152.5 mikuni jets the dyna jet 160 170 and 190. Moved the mixture needles from 1 turn out to 3.5 the bike wont even start without the enricher. Its hunting and backfireing through various carbs. When I tried to sync the right carbs to the left is when it ran the worst. Sprayed carb cleaner at the intake manifold and it seamed to make the engine rev. I think I must have a vaccum leak. Is that a normal problem for these bikes? Manifold leaks, gaskets or v boost HElP PLEASE. All I want to do is ride.

sounds to me you might have a leaking or a cracked boot or something . I use propane (unlit ) to check for leaks. And no it's not supposed to rev up you have a air leak . Hopefully better experts will chime in too .

A vaccum leak can mess up how it runs, even if you have all the rest perfect. Sounds like you've been all across the board with different combo's. I'm in the process of tuning my morleys kit right now. The advice is to start with the top end first (jets) Then needles, then A/F. If I were you I would check intake, carb and air box boots for any vaccum leaks first. Check your wet float heights to make sure they are set right, and go from there. http://www.vmaxforum.net/showthread.php?t=17274

Once you get that stuff squared away, here is a good post to help guide you through the rest. #36 has several good links. One thing that i'm struggling with, is to do only one change at a time. If you make several changes at a time, you don't know what you've done for sure that has helped or hurt you.

Yea you need to get the mains first but I gotta get the bike to run first cant take it off of choke and its hunting going up and down on rpms. Jets didnt change anything it is the idle thats messed up and you cant give the bike any gas, itll just die. Acts and smell like its bad lean. If it would run allitle better I can really check it for a vaccum leak. Aint even running good enough for that. I guess I can buy intake gaskets and change them to eleminate that. Was really wondering has anyone else seen something like this. Im sure someone has seen this with as many vmaxes that been own since 1985. What kinda gaskets are on the intake manifolds at the engine paper or oring?

I guess that I can make the floats rich like they was before I started this. They had to move a bit to get to 1.117. I gonna check the wet setting first, lots of bike running good at that setting.
How much would the floats change the idle circuit?

Your smallest jets in the jet block are clogged. You cannot fix with peashooter or shotgun. Have to completely dismantle carbs and clean everything. I use welding tip cleaner wires for the small jets. Available at Home Depot. The sticky for this will guide you. Every time my bike won't idle without the choke/enrichner it was caused by the small jets being clogged. This happens often with the ethanol gas if you let it sit for any length of time. This is very common....

Thanks m-cman. I will tear that jet block apart and clean it. The bike did sit and had black in the right two carbs. Ethanol sucks. Thanks again

Let us know if that fixes the problem or not. Most of my running problems have been carb related and mostly caused by the damn gas!! :bang head:

I have had some success using both Seafoam and Startron in the recommended amounts. One cleans and one keeps the ethanol in suspension. I also treated my tank with the KBS tank system so I don't get any rust that comes from the ethanol separation and condensation. My bike sits a storage unit and doesn't get driven much. :(

On the intake gaskets, the ones between the head and the manifold, they're square profile o rings in a machined groove. Pretty rare to go bad but not unheard of.

Vacuum leaks from cracked boots are much more common.

I was refering to the rubber boots, from intake to intake, when I suggested intake, carb and air box boots.

Ill let yall know probaly be this evening or tommorrow evening before I get to it. I am building a boat trailor for my bass boat and the boat is hanging from my rafters in the shead. Square tubing carbon steel trailors ought to be against the law. THANKS TO ALL THAT REPLIED.

Well sent my carbs off to a motorcycle mech. to put them in a ultrusonic bath and just got finnished installing them and same problem. Guess I got to take them back down and see if the mech. got them clean. This sucks will need some new rubber boots by the time im through will be about the tenth time out. MF, I dont imagine that nothing else could cause this.

Alright i went through the jet blocks and they were bad dirty good call m-cman but the bike runs better but still wont let me come completly off of the choke or the enricher. I shot carb cleaner throught the jet which you cant even see the hole on and thought i got it good but maybe not. Yall think I need to take them off one more time and force a tip cleaner through it. Seamed like the smallest tip cleaner I had was to big.

You are on the right path. The small jets and emulsifier tube get clogged very easily. The smallest are very hard to clean as they get clogged so bad it is like they have glue in them. Drop all the metal parts (no plastic or rubber!) in the jet block in really strong cleaner and let them sit overnight. (Might as well drop in all the metal carb parts while you are doing it). Just shooting cleaner will not work on badly clogged jets. Have to soak. Then see if you can push a small tip cleaner thru them or if you can see light thru them.

The fact that you said you cleaned the carbs a few times and the problem came back leads me to believe that you might have rust/debris in your fuel system. Drain a float bowl into a clear glass, let sit for a while and see what you get.

Also did you address the leaking intake orings and or carb boots. Those must be fixed or bike will ways have issues......
