So I bought a used Kerker 4-1 from a guy on ebay. He had it painted for show. Sandblasted it all down to bare metal and that's how I have it right now. I tried taking the can apart from the pipe. It won't budge. Looked inside of the can and it appears that when the guy originally painted the exhuast, he painted it and THEN put the can on. Is it safe for me to leave it the way it is and get it painted again? Or should I try to break the can loose somehow? Or does the can not come apart from the pipe?

There is a set screw holding the can from slipping off the pipe - it is located under the band clamp at the canister inlet. If it is already off, than the can should come off with heat and some tapping wit a rubber malet.

The clamp and set screw are already taken off. I'll try to heat it up tonight and see if it'll come off.

this may not be a lot of help, but my supertrapps were painted (unprofessionally) black and i had to get the inside baffle out. i used a bit of PB Blaster and waited 10 mins little bit of heat and a specially designed puller (courtesy KJ's idea) and bodda bing!

I have the Kerker too and usually the 'rotate and pull' method works. It is a tight fit, but it will come off. I would advise against painting the pipe. The pipes will expand and contract quickly and even hi-temp exhaust type paint will have a problem staying on (especially close to the heads). I would get them ceramic coated, couple of different places out there. I certainly would not run the pipes as they are or get them wet. When bare the Kerker pipes rust quickly.

We have a couple kerkers getting coated for customers as we speak. They recommend the black coating for the most durable finish. getting the cans off can be a bitch if they have been on for a long time.
