Simple question, but a true pain in the butt......

Every time I have to take the airbox off for anything, it is a pain to reinstall the breather hose back onto the crankcase. I can't get my hands in there.

Any simple suggestion, or simple mod to help with this?

I've been riding around with it disconnected for the past 3 days.

Brian, trick is to lift the coolant reservoir up and to the right side. Try to keep it upside-up to prevent coolant from draining out of the vent hose.

Yep, as mark noted. Give it the old reach through!

i just take the breather off of the box side and leave the hose connected. To reconnect it to the box I took out the coolant res. and used a pair of needle nose to shimmy it back on.

That's what I ended up doing too. Went on much easier than I had expected it too :clapping:

Also... That hose gets hard with use... best bet is to replace it perhaps to make life easier...

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

I find that with the coolant reservoir out of the way, I can reach and put a couple of fingers under the elbow of that vent hose, and then push the air box down onto it.

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

I also painted my the tip of the airbox international orange so it would be easier to see:punk:
Cheers

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

Needle nose pliers is the key, (once the coolant res. is removed)! There are all kinds of needle nose options too, extra long, bent...one of them has to work just right.

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

I have a set of long handled hose specific needle nose style pliers that work the bee's knees.

They're some cheapies from Harbor Freight but I use them so sporadically that they work fine.

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

i've never put the hose back on right, i'm just realizing. everyonce in a while i'll get oil spurting into that area too. hmmm good call gents. i'll have to check eventually.

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

Everyone's talking about needing pliers to do this. I'm not sure why. It's easy enough to reach in there with your fingers and do it (and I do not have small hands).

Yeah I don't use pliers on the max. Just stated there are tools out there that may help you some.

Ya that's wot I said - with the puke tank removed you can just stick a coupla fingers under the breather pipe's elbow and simply push it up over the airbox nipple, even with the spring clip on (the rubber's pretty loose + slippery, with the oil in it..)

Every time I tried using pliers I cursed and cursed as they kept slipping LOL :damn angry:

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

Yup, had this problem too!
I did peashooter tonight - and almost burst a vein in my brain trying to get it back in.

I ended up attaching it to the airbox first. I then fit it in place, and used needle nose pliers to shimmy it back on to case portion.

I couldn't get my hands anywhere in there. Not even close.

Re: Simple question - reinstall beather hose

I have a breather tube running from the oil fill cap and it was blocking the way to get my fingers in there. The breather hose is pretty rigid (SS) so I couldn't move it around so I used a thicker hose after the "t" in and made it a little longer thinking I could put it on easier that way. Well, it was easier but the thinner factory hose got pinched when the air box was properly fastened down. I had to cut down the length or the heavier hose going into the air box, but this made it hard to connect. I had to zip tie the SS hose coming from to the carb frame which made the connection much easier to make. I had to use a little Vaseline to make the fit a little easier. Whole lot easier to refit the air box now.
