I'm going to be doing this in a few days. I read a bunch on the searches, so I have a good Idea whats going on. I was looking up the torque specs and the starter clutch bolts are to be torqed to 24NM or 17 ft lbs. On some of the search threads they said to really tighten them which I assume would be more than the recommended torque. Is this OK or should I go with the torque spec from the manual.:ummm: I know to use loctite.

If you have a factory torque spec use it........:punk:

i would use red locktite. plus on the back of the bolts where the threads are starting to show ding it with a center punch to keep them from backing out.

I agree, the backing out of these bolts is what starts the clutch failure process that breaks the "cage" That rattling you hear is the cage being loose, when it finally breaks it's almost never start.

They ding the **** out of them at the factory and they still back out.

I tried dinging my new ones but couldn't get enough hit on them to succesfully get it done. I locktighted them with blue.

I took my stator cover off tonight because Im replacing a bad startor clutch tomorrow,I thought for sure I would find loose bolts but no , all three are tight.is that possible? startor clutch GONE wont start no more, but the bolts are all tight, Im gonning to pop the flywheel and change the clutch anyway, but is that somthing that happens ? tight bolts but bad clutch!

could it be the starter itself?

the springs could have disintegrated? The one clutch i've done (not on a vmax) the bolts were all in place but the springs had fallen apart.

Im reasonably sure the starter is good,90% and its a brand new battery.sounds like gravel when I try to start.

I've now got a very similar sounding problem, Twisted - awful gravel sound. Let me know if you figured it out. I'm about to attempt a starter clutch removal here

Got er done!, wasnt easy, flywheel needed a GOOD beating to get it off,(thanks for the " go ahead and beat" advise sean) I get it off put the new assembly on only to find that the threads in the flywheel need to be cleaned up in order to get the new bolts in,chase down a metric tap ,chase the threads put the assembly on the flywheel, go to put the flywheel back on the bike and the crank bolt wont catch, f#%$! back to the parts store for another tap, chase the crank threads, finnally tighten everyting up ,new gasket ,replace cover, new oil new filter, done, starts well other than I need to ride long enough to recharge the battery. heres a pic of the problem , as I said the three bolts were all tight, and I think they were peened so well that it messed up the threads takin them out,but alls well that ends well!:clapping:

Anyone around who's done this one? Couple questions - PM me with a phone number if you don't mind me calling.

Most importantly: I've got the puller setup. I'm trying to turn the big center bolt on the puller with a long bar and a socket, but the entire rotor just turns. Am I supposed to lock it somehow first in order to turn the bolt? I am an electrical impact gun, but it doesn't have the juice for this job.

Ok got er off finally - boy I hope I don't have to do that job again! Here is a small piece that came out of either the starter clutch or the flywheel assembly:

It looks lie it has a machined edge all along so I don't think it broke off of anything. Any ideas where it came from?

Dont throw it away its the key that holds your fylwheel in place! Call me

I get chills down my spine when I think about where I would be with this project if I didn't have this forum...

were we right dave? was the clutch or the gear itself shot?

REALLY small hairline crack in the starter clutch body, but it goes clean through. I took a pic, but the crack is small enough that I can't find it in the pic. I'm assuming that this was the prob and will install a new one.

ah. sorry man i was off! sucks it had a crack, sean hooking u up?

if I over torque the starter clutch, and or flywheel bolt can it cause issues when the bike warms up?was running fine before i did starter clutch now it doesnt want to run after 10 - 15 minutes.
