Hi Guys,
I bought a set of used carbs from Tom at Python Motorsports. They look clean and ready to go but I noticed 1 thing that concerned me.
When I engage the choke lever it only seems to engage the 2 carbs that are on the opposite side of the choke lever. I can hear those 2 carbs spit air when I engage the choke but the plungers on the 2 carbs on the opposite side don't budge. Everything looks ok and I sprayed the pistons/plungers with wd-40 and let them soak overnight but the pistons/plungers do not move on those 2 carbs when I pull the choke out. And comparing it to the carbs on my bike the pistons only seem to come out about half way on the carbs that do respond to the choke lever. Is there some kind of adjustment?

Tear apart the plunger assembly, clean, and lube them up.
I got a set of old used carbs and had the same issue. This took care of it. Easy to do. Just need a 14mmcustom wrench to open up the assembly.

Not really any adjustment on it. You could check to see if all the fingers are attached to the rods correctly. There is an indent on the linkage where the set screw for each finger goes.

After cleaning see if the plungers move freely by pulling them out by hand. They should return easuly as well. If tthey do not work properly without the linkage attached then you may need to clean better or may need some new parts.

If they work fine by hand but do not work correctly thru the linkage, and the linjage is put together correctly and in good shape, not much you can do. You could try to bend one of the fingers a little to have them pull out further but this is a last resort after proving the plungers work fine.

If the rod turns but the fingers don't move the locking screws on the fingers may be loose, or missing ....if one rod turns and the other one doesn't the keyed end of the non-moving rod may be rounded.

As Mike said....no adjustment in the plunger assemblies, if they turn out to be frozen then a good cleaning of the entire rack is probably in order.

I got one unstuck by removing the plunger assembly, soaking it and then pulled it out. Man...it was sure stuck in there. On the other carb I can't get to the screws to remove it. It looks as though I have to split the carbs to get to it because the assembly screws are not accessible. Is there a way to move the fingers that pull the plunger out of the way so I can grab it and gently try to work it out? I don't want to force anything.

I think if you remove the assembly plate, one at a time, you can reach the screws. Remove the set screws from each finger, and you should be able to pull the rod out. If the plungers are stuck that bad, I would recommend tearing the carb's down completely and cleaning them good.

Sorry to hear Tony, Tom must not go through the carbs before selling them.
