So the other day I bought a goldwing ('08 w/48k and for sale @ 4k) and when I got home I felt the need to take out the max so she would know I hadn't forgotten her. After a spirited romp I pulled into the gas station, and as I worked my way down thru the gears the weirdest thing happened. When I hit third gear the bike made this humming, buzzing sound and as soon as I pulled the clutch it died. When I let the clutch out it came back so I pulled the clutch again. The third time It fired right up fine.

Any ideas?

That is kinda goofy sounding... was the humming/buzzing just the sound of the engine turning without it running as you were rolling into the station? It sounds electrical is some ways. You might want to check kickstand and clutch switch... glad you made it home!

No, it was certainly not just the sound of compression. It started when I rolled off the throttle. When I pulled the clutch it died, as died the bike. I have been having trouble with the starter not wanting to engage. Get the "bucket of bolts" sound recently and last week it just refused to turn over. I live on a hill so I can just point it downhill and start it that way. Going to pull the starter on my next week off (get one every month).

My girlfriend is convinced that I bought the wing cuz it was less work then fixing the max. I'm smart enough to not tell her I thought the sissy bar was ruining the balance of the look and that I really wanted to ride this one solo...

Ha ha ha, yeah I hear you, the old goldwing definitely looks tempting for those long hauls I have to admit! I am almost always riding two up on my Max with the wife, but the funny thing is, it handles better with both of us on. I always get a weird feeling when it is just me on it now... I didn't install my sissy bar on my 92 cause I like the look of it a lot better without. So, I will be fabricating a low bar from the Virago grab rail, we will see how it looks.

Hope you find evidence of a problem when you pull the starter. I feel like some people have said that the starter clutch can cause some of the symptom you are seeing and hearing.

Ya, well, YOU"RE a Gomer!!1!1

But if I have to pull the starter clutch I might as well put on in one of those window thingies that let the whole world know how utterly uncool they are compared to you. I'm not planning on doing much more to the engine for the time being other then one of sean's jet kits and some news pipes. Anything else i should 'fix' while i'm in there?
