Todd, that was the single scariest thing that ever happened to me. Other than almost watching that ******* pass my son earlier and almost kill him. We were just cruising about 65-70 and just as I was coming up on a service plaza my rear wheel locked up solid. My son was behind me and he said he thought he was watching me die. Holy ****! I just fought like a sonofabitch to keep it up and from throwing me off and just as I almost stopped it let loose for a second then locked up again. Clutch, no clutch it didn't matter. Even in neutral it wouldn't budge. We had to lift the rear wheel to inch it off the road and after working backward then forward it let loose again. Jesse said it sounded like its coming from the final drive but I'm not sure. I'll tear it apart in a day or so and hopefully its not my transfer case that was just redone. I'm fine, was pretty shook up but VERY happy I fought hard enough to keep it from killing my ***. Has anyone ever heard of this happening ? We sat there for a good 2-3 hrs trying to figure out how to get home when my son ask a family that pulled in if they could help and they were nice enough to help us lift it into a uhaul they had and drove about 40 miles out of their way to bring me and my bike home. With Jesse following. Thank god they showed up cause I woulda slept there in the grass if I had to before I would have left it there. I finally got home about 4 Am. I'm starting to think either me or my bike is cursed. But other than all that. It was really nice to meet you, Brian, Mike and all the others who were so cool and friendly to my son and even he said "those Vmax guys are alot cooler than I expected" and I told him. Yea, we are a breed all our own. He even mentioned getting one but said he'd keep his Harley too. So, again, glad I'm alive to write this but DAMN! WTF!!!!
Glad that you are O.K.
Perhaps this was just a case of your rear brake caliper locking up?
A few years back, I had my front calipers lock suddenly, while on the Quebec superslab. A scary event. Similar to your experience, in that eventually things cooled down enough to get the wheel turning again, and after an hour or so, I was able to continue the ride.
The lock nut on the master cylinder had come loose, the adjustment bolt had gradually worked it's way forward, applying the brakes gradually which caused the rotors and fluid to heat up, until all hell broke loose and everything seized.
Cheers!
