I have my motor out of my project bike because I'm painting the frame and I also want to paint the engine. The motor has 30k on it and was never abused by the PO. But seeing as it is out, I guess it wise to do some work on it, the transmission I can upgrade the segment and backcut the gears and make myself an OD 5th, upgrade the 'O' ring etc but what about the rest of it?
Ideally I can leave the heads on and deal with the trans etc and leave the rest alone OR do I lash out and at least replace the rings and valve guides whilst I have it out? I started looking at the price of parts and it's not pretty, I really don't want to spend much on it at all if I can help it. Obviously I will at least check the valve clearances. I'm not after any more power on this bike, I don't care about that.
Thoughts?:confused2:

If it ain't broke don't fix it! Yes do the valve clearances, but unless it's smoking or there's something else wrong with it, leave it well alone and remember mine has 44k, Maleko is in the 60s I believe and Bill has 120k+ without ever opening it up!

If its not needed do not touch the heads or make only valves clearance.

"O"ring its not a big deal and it could be done anythime.
If you have time and willings i dont see any problem with engine diassemble for some inspectoin. Anyway if you're skilled enough you can diassemble/assemble the engine at the weekend.

Inspecting the tranny may be a good idea and even better to do OD 5th.

Tru.
Somethimes i think to myself: do not touch this!
But some people like to sculpt in **** :rofl_200:

Anyway is an lottery, you may have 200k miles on the clock and never have any issue but like mine was, you can may 20k and engine disaster...

i'd say itd be easier to do the o-ring while the engine is out eh? plus all it should cost u is either a new oring and a gasket?
i'm 50/50 on the tranny issue. if its not doing the 2nd gear thing yet they maybe its better off as -is. but it would suck to run into it 2-5k miles down the road eh?

It's not all that hard to get into the trans and would give you an opportunity to put all new gaskets on the covers and update the trans. If the engine ran well there is no telling how long it will last. It could blow up the day after you put it back in but it can also do it the day after you rebuild one. They were designed to last much longer then the 30K you have noted but I have had them fail with less then 10K (and seen more then one fail with less then 1K) on it.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to do the trans, check the o ring of course and check the valve clearances and leave it at that. Didn't really want to spend money on stuff that "shouldn't" really need doing.
