Bought one just like this, color and all, when I mustered out of the Navy in Nov '68. Great fun, class winner in drags at OKC Raceway in summer of '69.

There are many, but my 1947 CJs2a had a Chevy 283 in it. I could just use 2nd and 3rd gear and beat almost anything stop light to stop light. It only did about 75 m.p.h. with the original gear box but it would get there incredibly fast. It's amazing to me that I never damaged the drivetrain driving it like a dumb 22 year old does, HARD. Of course part of why I would win almost every race was the surprise factor of the other driver when it lept off the line like a scolded cat. I find the Vmax has some of that same effect, many people just think it's a normal cruiser type bike and by the time they realize it's not, I'm gone.

The last year for the T/A 455 was 1976. In '77 it was a 403 Olds in most of the Firebird Trans Am's but the Old English script 6.6 liter cars (they only came in black w/all the gold pinstriping) only came in a Gen-yoo-ine Poncho 400. These were also Hurst T-hatches cars, I think they did between 600-700 of them. MSRP in 1977 was $10,000. The one I had, my girlfriend bought it new and I bought it from her.

There may have been some COPO order cars for drag racers powered differently, but cars like that usually went to famous drivers. Royal Bobcat, a MI dealership like Chicago Nickey Chevrolet or Baldwin Motion Performance may have built some 455's for customers.

My first car in high school was a 78 T/A with the 6.6 litre 400. LOL....not a car for a first time driver to have, but it did teach me the proper way to negotiate a corner....lol

I liked that Smokey & the Bandit T/A 6.6 liter about as much as any car I ever had. It always got a lot of attention wherever I took it and I probably put 100K on it. No engine work, just things like water pump, brakes, tires, fuel pump, alternator, and a couple of Quadrajet rebuilds. Oh, and a radiator.

My 1982 Mustang GT was much more fun to drive, and handled better, a much lighter car. I swapped out the SROD 4 speed/7.9" rear end for a BW 5 speed and a posi 8.8" rear end, and some stuff I got at Steeda, a local company.

O snap..it was the 6.6 indeed.
