You're right I left school when I was 5 I think, or did I even go to school, can't remember. I struggle to tie my own shoelaces.

You come here asking advice/opinions and when it doesn't suit you, we're all dumb.
I hope a transmission specialist fixes your unique gear teeth problem where they magically slip about their engagement all whilst they still remain in mesh.

On the other hand it could be the clutch.
Jedi, check out my previous post . Mine was a transmission issue.. not the teeth but the dogs. I have pics if you would like to see them. And it is exactly the symptoms he was describing.

How many of the people who make comments here about my problem, made it to the 12th grade? I'm through with this web site and Mr. Moderator, please feel free to delete this whole thread. I wish you all the best and don't forget to keep the sunny side up. Bye

Don't let the door hit ya, DB

In his own words... "Limited knowledge" and "OK, maybe I don't explain very well"

Now if he'd said something was going on with second gear only and was 99% sure it wasn't the clutch then I and probably others could be thinking bad drive dogs on second gear which is common on these bikes although to me it does seem odd the way it has been described and its symptoms . I would have suspected banging, a handful of neutral ,or if it was skipping then I would have thought noise as the dogs come in and out.
The fact that he claims that it's doing exactly the same thing in 3rd (dancing in and out of gear) to my mind makes it seem suspicious and therefore the clutch.

A LOT less time and money could be saved by at least looking for the simple solutions first.

We try to diagnose problems thru our keyboards, offer free advice in good faith
and getting insulted for our efforts is a bit much IMO.

Oh I meant no offense to you my friend. Just saying I had same experience and it was a costly one.

As a new member of VMF and happy VMAX owner I'd like to say that I think wealth of information and experience you all offer when attempting to help other members solve problems is amazing. While I've never performed any major maintenance or repairs to any of the motorcycles I've owned in the past I hoping to change that with my VMAX and I look forward to this great resource and all your future help. Just my 2 cents

WVxnitemare, Jedi wasn't talking about you. He was talking about me. I did get a little upset with the answers I was getting, after I said it ONLY happened in 2nd and 3rd gear. To all that offered their opinion on my problem, I thank you. I'm terribly sorry if I insulted anyone. I'm sure there is one out there somewhere, but I've never met an ******* on a Vmax. Basically that's what some of you were calling me. As far as my limited "knowledge" about the Vmax, I rebuilt the transmission
on my 85 max and have done many mods that the average rider probably doesn't do. I'm almost 72 and have logged over 140,000 miles on my two vmaxes. I rode the bike to the Yamaha shop today, since no one on here with the exception of WVxnitemare understood my problem. The mechanic took it for a ride and told me it was in the transmission. When he came back from the test ride he said that third gear was gone. They want 3,000.00 to repair it. I just can't fit that into my fixed income budget, so I guess I'll be going to a Vmax rally on a FJR. Thanks anyway for all your efforts and again, I'm sorry I got upset with you guys as I know you were trying to help. You just kept slapping me with "It's the clutch" when I knew I had just put new discs and plates and clutch spring on a couple of months ago. WVznitemare thanks again for understanding my problem. If anyone wants to know what kind of person I really am, come to the rally at Deal's Gap October 11-14 this year. The best to all of you, John

OK, this guy is older, on a fixed income, and does have some mechanical skills, r.e. his self-report, I say, "let bygones be bygones." All is forgiven, he doesn't have much-longer to ride, but he's out-there in his 70's, still riding, when a lot of his peers are already dead or drooling down their shirts, and wearing Depends.

I may be a sucker for a line, but he did try to describe things as-best as he could. Maybe he doesn't have the wherewithal to fix it this time, or right-now. He seems like he wants to not burn his bridges, so I am gonna climb out on a limb w/a saw in my hand, and attack the branch underneath me. Let him be, and if there was someone who was near him who could maybe make contact, who has skills, maybe this septuagenarian motorcyclist can pilot his VMax once-again in rideable shape.

Yes, occasionally there have been 'pissers' on-here, as you so-often find on the web. This site has been remarkably free of them. Let's try to encourage the compassionate discourse among our brother VMax riders, and move forward free of the rot and rubbish that plague the web.

$3000.... wow if u can wrench its not that hard. Morley can hook u up with the undercut trans for a decemt price. Pull motor, strip the side covers and split the case. Ship the trans to morley and reinstall. Took me six hours to disassemble and eight to reassemble. Bag all the bolts in ziplock bags and label them and follow the manual. I dont recall any special tools just mechanic tools. Hope this helps. If u live in newfoundland id gladly give u a hand.

Well, you knew the clutch is new, nobody else didnt. Things like that should be mentioned, before start asking about others education level, no matter how many million miles you have ridden.

After talking with this Max owner, and after the clutch was restacked the bike was taken out for another run. The bike ran great thru 1st 4th and 5th just like he explained. Gentlemen it was not the oil or the clutch. Third gear came out and if it was kept running 2nd gear would come out. The problem went deeper than the clutch. I really don`t understand the slipping unless part of a gear was wiping at the time. Clutch slippage does not make a growling sound when slipping, which he failed to mention about the sound. And definitely the dozens of oils that are out there don`t growl. This motor will have to be split and new undercut gears installed.
If it was mine the Royal Star 5th gear would go in the tranny.

Reading the rest of these posts I think FireMedic is spot on, sorta, and say give this guy a pass even with his attitude.

More reading reveals that he was leaving out important symptoms that would have led to further and better diagnosis with the help of forum members.

But instead he just kept repeating the same list of incomplete symptoms over and over again without further elaboration and getting pissed (and insulting) in the process only led to the same answers over and over again.

We can't help you if you don't help us help you.

Or as I hear kindergarten and first grade teachers often say when trying to work through some issue with a toddler who wants to only growl, grunt or cry when expressing some unknown frustration....

"Use your words"

No one has as Crystal ball here last time I checked.

And if you can do the work yourself you can turn key it for less than $1K

Way less than $1K if you skip the undercutting, forget about any sort of 5th gear conversion and simply replace what's broken.

I did the 5th gear conversion on my 1540 when I built it and sometimes wish I had not as it puts the bike in a weird place of needing to wind it out too high in 4th (for the 1540) or else add another shift to a "too tall" gear when running the quarter.

Fantastic on the highway though there's no doubt.

Undercutting and all that is cool but the stock setup does work pretty well after all.

I did that on my old V65 when presented with a shop estimate 3X the value of the bike and simply replacing the broken stuff and doing it myself cut that cost down to 1/5 what Honda wanted for the job. Those estimates are nearly all labor.

And if you've rebuilt the tranny on one you can certainly do this job yourself. I've done a couple of them and it's not that hard, just need a place to work and nothing really special in the way of tools.

Good luck and hope you make the ride your hoping for.
Sorry for the rocky start here, hope you stick around and keep the bike on the road too.

Agreed !

If you want to open it up again Rusty we can put a different trans in it with completely different ratios. This would lengthen 1st - 5th all more evenly spaced.

Thanks Sean, I figured that was an option and might do that someday.

I don't have much time for the bike at all these days, 9-10 months a year away from home and haven't put over 2000 miles on that engine yet even.

Still runs fantastic by the way.....

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a similar problem; if I downshift to second gear and roll on the throttle ever so lightly, it pops into a false neutral. Now if I roll on the throttle normally, it doesn't do that. It is unnerving to say the least...
