In a fit of boredom and jumping around Wikipedia, I've discovered a lot of strange types of engines that have been developed over the years that I had never even heard of.

Ever hear of a "split single"? Me neither. A two stroke "twin" that uses one cylinder to charge the other.

How how about a Deltic Diesel?

"Jumo" opposed cylinder two stroke diesel...two pistons facing each other in one cylinder.

The 4+2 "Six Stroke" engine...scroll down for the animation

The "H" engine....apparently this was used in a motorcycle at one time.

The Ariel "Square Four"

And the RE-5....a rotary powered Suzuki....talk about a strange machine. Read the whole article if you have time...it's a pretty interesting bike.

The Quasi-Turbine engine

The "Centennial Engine"....scroll down to the bottom

And the Sleeve Valve engine

All of those are awesome. One thing that amazes me is that we can create the space shuttle, the internet, and remotely control machines cruzing around Mars, but when it comes to powering our transportation devices we still rely mainly on the simple crankshaft and piston internal combustion engine. After all these years and technological advances you think that we would have created something more efficient (not converting power to heat).

Its amaizing what they come up with in reguards to the engine. Definately have some cool designs and ideas.

My favorite looking engine is this Injected, Blown and Turbocharged Vmax powerplant. Although probably ment for 4-wheels,
I'd love to horseshoe this badboy in a bike.

And here's the world's largest internal combustion engine.

The largest 14 cylinder version has
109,000 horsepower
5.6 million ft/lbs of torque
2,300 tons
Bore: 3', 2"
Stroke: 8' 2"
Displacement: 25,480 liters
Runs at 100 RPM

See the big thing on top with the scaffolding around it? That's the turbo.

Here's another impressive one....built in 1912, and never had a single breakdown. Ever. Even moreso, it ran at full load for 50 years continuously. Designed so all maintenance could be done without stopping it.
