Those are Shoria batteries. If you go down into the specs. you'll see the LFX number that Shoria uses.

I bought a UB12180 SLA Battery for about $46 (including Shipping):
http://www.apexbattery.com/universal-ub12180-12v-18ah-sealed-lead-acid-ba.html
It has 13 more CCA than the Shorai (UB12180 - 283 vs Shorai - 270 vs Stock -200) but it does weigh about 9 lbs more.
The UB12180 has been in my Vmax for almost 6 years now and still hold's it's charge like a champ.
I put the trickle charger on it every few weeks over the winter but it always shows as fully charged.

UB12180 Features:
- AGM design yields excellent Deep Cycle service Performance rating
- Less than 3% per month standing self discharge.
- Maintenance Free
- Valve Regulated
- Float and Cycle Use
- AGM design may offer greater reliability in extreme use applications
- Leak Proof/Spill Proof
- 1 Year Warranty

The UPG (Universal Power Group) AGM Battery is a state of the art design battery made in Asia. This battery is a sealed (Non-Spillable) requires no addition of water during the life of the battery. The AGM Battery is TRUE DEEP CYCLE can be mounted in any position, requires no maintenance and may be transported by Air or Ground without any special handling regulations. When an AGM battery is charged no hazardous fumes escape the battery case, gases are processed within the battery itself.

There is also a 22ah Version with 420 CCA (UB12220) for $52 (Including Shipping):

I did the battery box mod a few years ago and bought a generic no-name battery to fit a Gold Wing. Spent a bit less than fifty bucks, and everything works great...

+1 on the USB Dennis. Also, they are rated at 22 AH as opposed to an OEM at 16AH. This battery isn't a lower quality battery because of the price. I'm going on my 3rd year with one and it cranks hard still. The weight is the only down side, like mentioned.
I don't trickle charge it. I charged it twice. Once when I first got it and again when I left the key on (doh) 10 amps for 1 1/2 hr. each time. If your on a budget and want a good battery, check it out.

I like my Odyssey PC680 AGM battery, been in since 2009 without any issues whatsoever. I paid $120 for mine shipped. I typically have stored it without being on a charger but I thought that since I was storing in a cooler environment this past winter that I would put it on a Battery tender charger. Predictably it has fired easily, vigorous turned over each time in the 30-40 degree temps I have it stored in.
I just looked at BatteryMart.com and they have it on sale for $116 with free shipping, here is link: http://www.batterymart.com/p-odysse...dyssey_pc680&gclid=COK87cTFrrYCFYI-MgodK10ABg
Here is Odyssey's site with all the facts on the battery: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm

+1 I'm a big fan of the PC680 also.

Electrolite/ battery acid info.

Bought a new battery, Yuasa YB16AL-A2, OEM. It came dry, and did not include battery acid separately) So I went to Pep Boys and asked for some battery acid. The guy ( actually the manager of the parts dept) Said " we call it battery water" He said " acid scares people"
He gave me a bottle that said battery water, kind of pee yellow. Looked for the ingreadents, none were listed, which I thought was strange. Seemed expensive a $6.00 but bought it anyway.
Went home, porred it in the battery and trickle charged it ( 2 volts) for 24 hours. Checked the voltage, 12.7 volts, so I put it in the bike, but didn't test it till the next day. DEAD the next day WTF. So I suspected the battery was defective. After a few hours of trouble shooting it turns out that the battery acid, or lack there of, was the problem. Pep Boys battery water is just that, water, distilled watter, but water just the same. Guess they put a little food coloring in it to make you think it is acid. What a scam and what a stupid manager. Went to Auto Zone and got the real deal for $4.00 I will not be going back to Pep Boys for anything.

LOL I think so. I have run in to stupid employees at Pep Boys before. They must hire anyone at minimum wage and no training. I'm sure if I asked a question about video games he would have extensive knowledge.

Re: Vmax Battery replacement

I have detailed pics of a larger battery installed if anyone wants them. Considerably more cranking power than the other batteries (even the gell and no maintenance type).

Plus cheaper and available at your local sears.

hi sean; joe here {dag; whatever}, does the bigger battery drop in? and do you know the battery model numbers ? I gotta put this problem behind me.

Weird;???

Wet batteries always ship dry with the acid in a separate sealed rectangular plastic container packaged in the same box as the battery.

Did your battery shipping box have an empty rectangular space in it where the acid should have been?

Maybe state laws are different there???

holy crap...I just bought a 1986 and the battery promptly failed...I just fainted after reading the instructions

What instructions ??
Do you mean removing the Battery ?
It's actually pretty easy.
And I have had this battery in my Vmax for almost 6 years now and it's still going strong:

I used an OEM YUASA wet-cell battery to replace the first OEM battery and they both died within 2-3 years.
