What do you Vmaxers do to get a wider tire on rear.

i have a 17x6" deget wheel that clears stock swingarm, and use 190/55 tyre with a modified fz1 caliper bar, but the wheel is offset to the right quite substantially. funny enough, handling is great no matter which way youre leant over.
if i was to make/modify a swingarm, i'd be very interested into offsetting the rear back towards the centre of the bike. on that note there might be a problem with where shaft would be exactly in relation to the rim, but i could only say for certain once i've tried.

When I said the bike had an FJR rear end, I meant it had the Final Drive (pumpkin).

This is a direct interchange with the venture rear end, with the exception of adding a '025" spacer between the swing arm & the pumpkin.

What do you Vmaxers do to get a wider tire on rear. Venture limit is
140/90-16 71H. This is on a 1st gen. Bike is officially an 83 by birth.

Below is a decent picture of FJR rear end on bike, bike is only 2/3 assembled though.

whats the limit, swingarm or rim?

that rear rim would be a nice donor for a radial! is it a direct swap for vmax's?

For the stock wheel we can fit a 170 without changing anything. Beyond that, you can double notch the swingarm to fit up to a ( I believe) a 190 radial tire.

Swing arm is the limit. On left side.

I have heard a couple of guys have offset wheel towards brake side by moving spacer and could get a 150 on.

Seems like that would affect handling though.

I am not sure about swapping with Vmax's. The drive side will mount to the pumpkin alright I know for sure. I have an extra set of rims.

Is there a thread I can look at that details the swing arm notching?

These are the best pictures I have of rear swing arm at interference point.

Fairly tight in there.

The bracing shown in previous post may or may not be doable. The gas tank may interfere.

I have an extra swing arm I could experiment with.

Here is my double notch (COO). like the other double notches set up for a 17" wheel, a 200 will fit. a single notch will take the 180-190 tops.

whats the dimension between the pivot bolts? i could measure the spare i have laying around right now. anyway a transplant could work? the vmax swingarm can take a 170 typically no problems stock.

i have probably 15mm of space on the right side. right side has no notch, left has one, 190 tire. i couldn't see fitting a bigger tire with moving it that much over to the right which can't help handling moving it 5-10 mm. i don't think the notch could be any deeper either.

measuring it out, and keeping it somewhat centered (stock offset). it looks like a 210 would fit. With Neil's 200 (still running around the stock offset, it I remember right) there is some room with it. I have the 170 on the back right now, and there is a ton of room on either side.

After seeing this picture, I want to go out and by a Venture! Just look at this base frame.... you could easily make a chopper, a bobber, a streetfighter... almost anything from this! ****... my wheels are turning!:punk:

LOL, I have a clean title though we already hacked into the frame. Find a frame without a title for cheap and I'll help you with this other one. I do also have an 88 Venture here that is still mostly complete (was going to rob the engine from it). It's crashed hard so perfect candidate to strip down.

The bike we have is complete less the rear diff for now. It was also running and a great bike before the deer ruined the fun. Lots of miles but it ran perfectly. That only means it's going to make more power when the conversion is done! It would be half that price and already got a lot of the parts removed from it.

You're going to want the 86 and up version (1300) if you decided to go that route.

man i still think those venture RIMs would make a sick candidate for radial conversion.

does anyone know if the front as well is a direct bolt on for the vmax?

its a bit wider than ours, looks like an 86-93 is a 18x2.5 instead of our 18x2.15. still curious on the hub if its the same though?

Not sure. I've got one or two around here I think. There was someone who did the swap years ago so I don't think it's anything difficult. The rear is a bolt on. I haven't even looked to see what sizes of tires are available in the 16".

well looks like kosman could help me out:

i'm gonna shoot you an email about a possible trade Sean.

and does anyone know Kelly Cash?

he doesn't say what year his venture wheels were? The 83-85 wheels looked the same but I know for sure the rear diff's are different offset. Since the 86-93 and up rear diffs are a direct swap the rear wheel should also be a direct swap. I've got one laying around here somewhere and maybe I can verify that.

I suspect that if you used the early wheel with the early diff you'd have no problems either.

agreed, but if the width of the swingarm is smaller, the wheel hub may also be smaller yea?

from what i remember the fjr has a short axle, as in not going all the way thru the frame, and an exposed corner/knuckle. that's a biggest problem i can see...
i was actually thinking of making a one off alu swingarm using parts of other arms...

Yes, simple sheet metal must be welded into frame and thats all.
When You come by to PL hook with me and that swingarm is Yours for free.
Alxe/pivot and drive shaft(longer) included.

The biggest problem I saw, the main reason I throw that idea was serious gas tank modification.
Funny, I will be doing more crazy project this winter LOL
