Unless they put it on the base coat, and cleared over it.

As thick as a stick-on is, you'll easily be-able to feel the raised edge of it, even when covered by a layer of clear-coat, which is probably only a couple thousandths of an inch. Stick-ons are usually a vinyl/polyurethane composite probably 20+ times that.

You're probably thinking of something like a water-transfer decal, which is much-thinner.

You'd be surprised how thick a clear coat can be built up, sanded and buffed, lol. If not done professionally, yes you'll be able to feel the topography, but if done right, you'll never know until you start prepping it for another paint job.... It gets real messy when stickers have been cleared over. But it looks like you said, hard to say, but judging by the way the light is bent on the bottom. Looks raised, cleared over.... Maybe some light sanding to rid the "orange peel" look.

Sure, you're correct. This looks like one of those tank protectors, for the sportbikes, so your rodeo buckle doesn't carve a Grand Canyon into your PPG. They are so-think, they have a 'squish' to them, providing the protection. I'm old-enough to recall when Cal Custom sold all-sorts of designs for your ride, probably more-oriented to the car/truck market than bikes.

I had a friend who used-to take a Kodacolor print, spray it a few times with clear, and then set the picture in water, to soften the paper stock, so it could be removed, leaving the color dyes of the photograph on the several layers of clear. He'd then use that on a car, truck, boat, bike, whatever. The limiting factor was that it didn't work well for compound surfaces, it had to be flat, or a simple curve.

I looked online, yes, it's a transfer, and yes it's been laquered over, quite a thick coat.
