So I tore into the harness today. Could not find anything wrong in the actual wiring yet, and then it stopped having the problem again, making it really f%@?$%g difficult to find the fault! :bang head:

Anyway, the one thing I found is this: a broken diode (I think?) in the wiring. Under the TCI, there is a blue/white wire going to this diode, and then a green wire on the other side of it, the whole thing is in a transparent sleeve and connected by a couple of crimp-on connectors.

See my pictures below - I took one of the broken diode and one of the wiring diagram. The only L/W (blue-white) wire I can find in the diagram goes to a diode, but the other side's wire isn't green (?) - and it's related to the oil gauge light.

What I desperately need to know is, what is the spec of that diode? I need to replace it.. Gary McCoy can't help with the spec - all he knows is that it's $19 (!!) from Yamaha.

If anyone has any clue I would be so grateful! I went to SkyCraft and bought a couple of power diodes today - a 50V 1A and a 50V 2A, those were the lowest tension they had available. Will either work? Does anyone know?

PS: Kyle, I found vulcanizing tape at SkyCraft, will hopefully get my harness back together with it tomorrow!

I'm getting more confused...

I studied that wiring diagram some more. Found that the service manual calls the blue/white wire 'LAN', but can't find any of those in the diagram. :bang head:

Then I remembered that when I pressed the starter button, the oil light comes on. That's with that broken component removed. It is was indeed the diode I circled in my diagram picture, the oil light could not come on, could it?

also I'm wondering, if that component is actually that diode, and it was broken, could it give me the symptoms experienced - i.e. the bike staying on when ignition is switched off?

Yes G, this could be the reason of your problem.
Look where L/W wire goes? Directly to +12V suply.
If that diode is burned then somethimes burned semiconductor
works like short circut wire, basicly close to 0 Ohm.
And when that happens suply goes to BR wire witch is main bike suply wire, directly trough LW wire. And hers your problem. I think...

I was wondering at purpouse of using this diode and do not have a good clue but propably that diode causes oil light to blink just for the moment, when you wanna strat the engine and oil light bilnks for a momment.
When its burne it should cousung the symptoms that you have.
Just my toughts...

Anyway IMO it looks like typical 1-3A diode and i think its not a big deal witch type of diode you will use.
I have bunch of them lying around.
Again IMO.
 
Another development:

yesterday, I realized that the only way to switch 'Christine' off is the kill switch, or the combination of gear and side stand.

Check this out: with the bike running, if I flick my added switch off (it kills the wire from the battery to the Main fuse), the bike keeps on running, although a little weird and all the lights are flickering. If I then pull the ignition fuse it dies.

Once the motor's off, all electrics are off when my main fuse switch is in the off position, just like when the main ignition (key) switch is turned off normally.

What does this say?
 
Another development:

today I finished replacing the whole wiring harness with the one from the spare bike, and Christine is no more. I can turn my bike's electrics with the ignition switch again - woohoo!

I'm wondering whether to leave the main fuse switch I attached to the fuse box in there as an additional security device, if flicked off there's no juice to the whole bike.

Sorry I didn't have time to document the whole process, but all in all it really wasn't that difficult, all I had to remove was seat, faux tank, side covers, scoops, air box, both sides plastic panel, unscrew Vboost servo and tuck it aside, and remove TCI with bracket and vacuum sensor. Then simply cut all the zip ties, unplugged everything and pulled the whole harness out, then replaced it with the spare and put everything back together.

If anyone wants a harness with a gremlin in it let me know! :biglaugh: Christine may come back to life yet LOL..

It won't be long before we'll be looking for reports of rides from our brothers in warm climates. It will give us something to read inbetween our winter sessions with the mod monkey climbing all over our backs up in winter wonderland!:snow::snow::snow::snow:
 
Hey G,
Did you ever take the harness apart to look for any obvious problems?? Just wondering if we could learn what exactly caused all that misery...if there were any other issues besides that diode....Just a thought.....
