My Max when it arrived had always a ticking sort of sound coming somewhere from the motor. I kept asking the local Yamaha dealer here but they seemed to think they always sound like that . Needless to say i now use someone else and last time he balanced the carbs and the noise had gone and was running better , I have since done bout 900kms and sounds like the carbs need balancing again .

Does this sound right and if so can i do this myself and is it the same as syncing the carbs ?:ummm:

IMHO, absolutely Gunrunner ! I find I have to sync (or balance) my carbs about every other month. Only takes a few minutes & it seems to be the first thing to get out of spec. Sync tools aren't that much money, or build your own for dirt cheap if need be. I have some slight ticking noises in my VMAX as well, but no problems have occured. Maybe the valves are slightly out of adjustment, but not worth bothering with yet as far as I'm concerned.

I use a motion pro tool w/ murcury for syncing. As for the ticking, many Vmax's, Vmaxes umm Vmaxi :biglaugh: have a slight ticking noise.

Without hearing it myself, I wouldn't know where to start. Mine is an '07 with 2000 miles on it and it has a slight ticking noise to it, and everything checked out on it A-okay. Its just the way it is, it bugs me a little cause I know its there, but others can barely hear it.

It might be many things;
-The nature of the beast
-starter clutch
-valves
-exhaust leak
just to name a few. If you can get a hold of a mechanics stethoscope you might be able to pin point the area of the noise.

Then there is the loud pipe fix, ya can't hear it over a decent set of pipes. :punk:

**** , ticking noise , the firt time i rode my max with no helmet, ( just up the street ) i said holy **** , it by far is the noisiest motorcycle engine i've ever heard , IN MY INTIRE LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know, I dont have any ticks with this 85 engine, sounds pretty solid at all RPM's. Maybe my valves are adjusted to tight:ummm:

Just wait to you have a rod bearing let loose, than ya will hear some ticks Rat a Tat Tat Thunk Thunk Thunk Rat a Tat Tat !:rofl_200:

I DON'T PERSAY' HAVE A CLICKING NOISE , JUST THE MECHANIC'S OF THE ENGINE ARE LOUDER THEN ANY OF MY OTHER BIKE'S ! PLUS I STILL HAVE STOCK EXAUST , SO THE NOISE IS'NT GETTING DROWED OUT BY ANYTHING ! ONLY BY MY HELMET .:punk:

I've seen Paul C. do valve adjustments on almost brand new bikes that were way off from the factory. Friday or Monday bike?
