Which Setup Should I Use

A more relaxed 5th will never hurt unless you're drag racing. On the contrary, it's awesome to cruise at lower revs. Remember that at 70mph you'd usually be doing around 5000rpm, whereas with the 5th OD you'd be way lower - I think Sean said it's 15% so just about 4250..

Still, if you're only gonna do short runs and never cruise anywhere then I say keep it all stock, just undercut for reliability.

This.

The OD lets you have all the torque and vboosting joy as designed while not eating as much fuel on a highway. Really the only reason to go venture vs OD is cost in my opinion. The only reason to mess with stock in the first place is if you do a lot of highway or just really want the range on the rare occasions you do.

Our RS overdrive is 23%. So 70mph is 3500 rpm. 80mph is 4000 rpm. 100mph is 5000 rpm.

The venture unit is 10% across the board.

A 6th gear could be possible but the trans would not survive. To make it fit into the same area as the 5 speed you have to make the gears narrower. This weakens the gears so durability is affected. Yamaha tried this with their Fazer/FZX 700's and the FZR1000's (87/88). The FZR got the 5 speed and the FZX got the 6 speed. We ran both in the drag Fazer and the 6 speed didn't last as long.

The best mileage I ever got was 49mpg. That was with the overdrive trans and running at 90-100mph in eastern kansas. The bike wasn't exactly a tuned down version either. It made 127rwhp on it's last dyno session. The bike was sold last year and is currently running around Canada with it's happy owner.

I have the Venture drive and routinely get 44 mpg in normal riding. Completely stock jetting, etc. Wouldn't go back to stock drive... However, I don't drag race or do a lot or hooligan riding, just occasional bursts of acceleration for fun. :biglaugh:

M-c, where in Texas are you? Do you ever find yourself still searching for another gear?

I have a suspicion that I have the venture final on my bike right now, but it's not running this week for me to get out on the road and check again. I think last week I was riding at 4k at 60 mph, which could be totally wrong. It was a bit buzzy, but I was running on 3 cylinders. It's almost like I don't even know what the bike is really like so it's a bit hard to make this decision. I'm just thinking about where this thing makes power. If I'm just trying to move around in traffic, pulling from 60-70 in OD 5th might not be far enough into the power to make a quick acceleration out of a traffic situation. I know I'll love it on longer trips, though. This is why I'm leaning towards the venture final and stock gears.

4000rpm @ 60mph is definitely stock pumpkin.

If you're worried about pulling at 60/70 don't be - just drop a gear and scream past in full vboost!

I still say stock 1-4 and 5th OD is the best way to go, by a long, long shot.

Ok. I just sent the confirmation to do undercut with OD. Now I gotta find more info on the HD oiler kit. I'm not putting the exact stuff in the search, I guess, because I'm getting a million threads and not enough specific info. Thanks for all the help. I wish there were more people that had the OD 5th.

Question: I've only had 1 bike that had an overdrive gear stock and it shifted as if it were a full 6th gear. The only difference was the revs didn't drop as much from 5th > 5th OD, and a little light came on to inform me I was using the OD gear. Does your setup do the same thing or does it more or less just engage a wider range 5th?

Pretty sure he just swaps an entire 5'th gear out of a Venture Zack so its a pretty decent jump from 4'th to 5'th

Sean's mod takes a 5th gear out of a Royal Star Venture, undercuts the dogs on that gear and undercuts the receiving side of the gear it touches. It is a complete replacement of your stock 5th gear. This used to be just a swap (apparently), but the gears were far enough apart that if you weren't rev matching carfully and letting the engine spin down on upshifts, the gears would wear too much. The way it is set up now, rev matching still helps, but the undercut sucks the gears together so there's less wear (or something). The RSV gear is a 23% reduction in gear ratio from stock. This makes the 4-5 jump pretty big. HOWEVER, it makes your highway cruising RPM drastically lower. There's no extra light or anything. It's not that the bike won't handle the revs on the highway. It's just that many guys feel like an extra gear would make the "cruising" part of this "muscle cruiser" would be a little more comfortable if the engine speed was lower on long trips. It would be great if we could add the Venture 5th gear AFTER the stock V-max 5th gear, but that's not gonna happen because of the size of the transmission.

Zack, its a straight swap of the 5th gear.
Along with the dog/ undercut work.
The RSV gear is really noticeable. The jump from 4th to 5th is a LOT!

Mine is running 80mph at just 4000 rpm.

Fantastic on the slabs.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm looking to go that way eventually because I do a fair bit of highway miles and would enjoy the more relaxed ride and better mpg's. I'd just need to break my habit of running in 5th for pretty much all speeds over 30mph though lol.

The Venture diff. works ok for me with my slightly lower than stock tires. 110/80/18 and 180/55/17. It probably just gets me back to stock. The stock Differential gives me a little more acceleration with the above tires. I haven't put the stock diff back on since swapping it last summer, so I'd have to say I like it better. Gas mileage isn't all that different with either pumpkin. It's an ok mod if you get the pumpkin for a decent price. $200 tops.

Trust me Zack, you'll not be dropping it into 5th at 30 mph!:biglaugh: I don't normally go below 55-60 with my OD 5th, and cruising a medium curved road in the 65 to 80 mph range is nice and relaxing.

If money really is'nt an issue, I'd go with one of these tranny's, should give you EVERYTHING your looking for!
