gear ratios are in his chart. None of them will do what you want. If you get around to 1500 engine you will need the stock gearing anyway.

newb here just wondering - would any of those other shafts fit an '86 VMax? :ummm:Other than the 86-93 Venture, which I believe is a straight swap..

Just thinking, as a 2.9 ratio would go a long way in helping that silly little 4 gal tank - I'm gonna be highway commuting a lot as soon as I get hold of my V-Max next week!
 
I am wondering if the xs850 pumpkin would work for the max or what small mod would have to be done.
 
From what I'm finding trying to put a V-Max rear wheel and disk brake on a Virago the answer with the 2.909 rear is no.

Mr. Max uses an inset spline behind an extended boss that reaches into the ring gear. The Virago 2.909 gear set, and I'd assume the XS850 rear is same/similar, doesn't accomodate the extra lenght of the spline hub outboard of the splines. The dust protection is also different between them but I haven't yet worked on whether that's significant or not.

My guess is that Yamaha on the V-Max and Venture reshaped the inside of the ring gear and the outside of the cush hub to place wheel induced loads on the cush hub in line with the ring gear's carrier bearing, where the less powerful XV700/750/1000/1100 and the XS850 pumpkin/ring gear can accommodate what would be an overhung moment ocurring outboard of the ring gear carrier bearing's centerline.

The solution on my Virago chopper project, since it's a styling not a power exercise will be to mate the Virago's cush hub to the V-Max wheel. I don't think you could go the other way and expect the 2.909 rear drive to survive against the V-Max's engine power.
