I saw this article, about trying to I.D. US soldiers from the WW II Pacific Theater, POW's who were shuffled from one place of incarceration to another, many dying along the way. At times, they were transported in horrible conditions on Japanese 'hell-ships,' which then were bombed by Allied forces, who had no-way of knowing that the ships they were bombing, torpedoing, or using naval artillery on, were transporting hundreds of American POW's.

Something in a similar vein, searching for lost Navy vessels. This guy has done searches which have located 5 USN WW II submarines:

He's done something that allows families to know where their loved ones are, those lost at sea in wartime.
