Does this look like normal wear?

I'm no expert, but old oil is normally black not brown/muddy. Best see what happens to new oil and keep an ear out as advised above. Another investigation method which is simple if usually very dirty is to take off the sump and see what is in it and look up at crank/bearings/cases and see if...

    Throttle body master sync screw

If you want a starting point then turn the screw until it is about halfway between topping out and bottoming out and take it from there, but as gtgboom says it is the mm/Hg that matters. Good luck!

Cannot get flywheel off 85 Vmax

I have rebuilt two Vmax engines. With the first one the flywheel came off after a brief struggle, with the second one I did not bother and simply left it in place because I was splitting the crankcases anyway. Just mentioning this in case you plan to strip the whole engine - no need to remove...

    Trashed final drive

I have never seen one that bad before and I have stripped quite a few final drives on XS1100, XJ900 and Vmax models. They are normally extremely strong. I wonder if it was run without oil , or assembled wrongly if previously stripped. Your only option is complete replacement it appears to me...

Barn find V-Max - what to inspect

Maybe you guys do not have the obsessive-compulsive disorder that makes me do so many stupid time-consuming and useless activities!

Barn find V-Max - what to inspect

My advice (having done this myself) would be not to worry too much about what is wrong and what is right. Just assume that it is all wrong, take it all apart down to the last nut and bolt and fix everything that you find. It will keep you and your dad busy for a long time, cost a lot of money...

    doesnt want to start !

I agree. It is normal to use the choke to start the engine even in Florida heat. That is what the choke is for. If it has been starting from cold without the choke it is too rich as Sean says. My gen 1 always needs choke from cold, if only for about 30 seconds...

Definition of Irony where AGATT is scorned

Sometimes I wear PPE and sometimes I don't. I make that decision based on circumstances and my preferences that day. My personal safety is my decision, and certainly not that of any government. prevent me from harming others - yes, but I do not require protection from my own decisions. Of course...

    Gen1 Head removal

Part number 26H 12469 01 is plastic. Not that strong but all it does is convey water. Trouble is it is in an awkward place to get out and to fit and this two activities tend to damage it!

    Gen1 Head removal

The compression ratio is the ratio between the volume of the cylinder and combustion chamber in an internal combustion engine at their maximum and minimum values says Wikipedia. It is not a measurement of pressure. Here is what the Yamaha manual says about measuring compression pressure and the...

    gen 1 engine overhaul

The cases can be replaced, but you will need to identify the right size bearings for your crankshaft/crankcase combination. This is done by a calculation from the numbers for the main bearings stamped on the crankshaft and the crankcase. Crankcase number - crankshaft number = bearing number...

    Knock knock 😣

I fixed a Yamaha XTZ750 motor that sounded worse than that and had far more debris in the sump from just two cylinders! The main bearings were fine so there was no damage to the cases. I only replaced the rods and the crank in the end with new bearings all round of course. So it may not be...

    Carb tune.

Is it a single carb on the engine? What type of carb or carbs does it have? How do you set the idle speed normally? From your description I would say that something is not returning to its idle setting - be it slide, cable, butterfly linkage or butterfly shaft.
