I would be interested in knowing more about the designation "Limited Edition". This designation makes it sound special in some regard. Yes, I understand this is the 20th year of production for this first generation V4 1200 Vmax, but is there more to it than the little badge on the airbox cover? Is the '05 any different than the '04 or '06? Do we know how many were produced as compared to other years? Mine is so extensively modified that I have no idea what it originally looked like?

2005 Vmax isn't any different other than color and a badge of the faux cover.
Here are a couple examples of stock 2005 vmax

Supposedly only 2000 made.

I wandered into a Yamaha dealer on a whim in 2005 and spotted the one anniversary bike they had. Like a lot of people, I had always wanted one of these bikes. This one was 1800/2000. The salesman guaranteed this was the last year for the vMax and I ended up walking out of there as a new owner. (And thinking it might hold its value better than an older model) Needless to say the bike was only special by the numbered badge and paint job. Then they brought the bike back for 2 more years. I enjoyed it for a number of years, sold it when I wasn’t riding much, then got back into it and bought a mint ‘89.

Mabdcmb,

That is a very pretty shade of red. Thanks for sharing. Did all the '05s come in red? Because mine used to be red too. The previous owner repainted the faux tank, chopped rear fender, and (unfortunately) the two aluminum faux scoops; black lacquer. The front fender he replaced with a faux carbon fiber option, which looks pretty good. He said he was shooting for an all-blacked-out profile, offset with gold anodizing, and carbon fiber. The Dymag carbon fiber wheel rims are the real deal.

You know Sparky,

I have had a similar experience with yours. About 20 years ago I bought a gorgeous custom blue 1995 Vmax, with a 4 into 1 Kerker header, and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, primary gears replaced with lower ratio gears. The previous owner whom I bought it from, said he was willing to trade top end speed for a little more torque. I really liked what he did and bought the bike. I rode it for many years, putting on about 25K additional miles.
Unfortunately, the transmission seized on my watch. But because it was the sweetest bike I had ever ridden (at that point in my life), I decided that rather than parting it out and walking away, I would rebuild the engine and transmission and give it a second lease on life. I rode that '95 for several more years, before finally selling it, with 59K miles.

So where does a '50 something juvenile go from there..? It seems I also had an affinity for Honda CBR1100XX Blackbirds. I've ownd two over the last 10 years. But now that I'm squarely starting my third and final trimester, and because my Vmax has always remained in my heart... Here I am again, but this time I have this tricked out "wanna-be sport cruiser" that bit me when I was in between mean machines.

BTW- Sparky, are you an actual sparky?

Only 2,000 '05 Vmax 1200s manufactured MadMax? Has anyone else heard this? Was that worldwide?

Yes, I was actually a sparky before I retired. And yes, I was told at the time that only 2000 red with flame tank Vmaxes were produced worldwide that year.
