Anybody have magnets on the bottom of their bike?

LOL! Hey that sounds good - I've been getting really pissed at this light just two streets up from where I'm staying - it WILL NOT go green no matter how long I sit at the red at night.. If a car comes it changes, but if not I just have to turn right, do Uey and another right in order to get on with my trip! :confused2:

So do we reckon we simply need to strap a phat magnet to the engine underside? Guess it'll help collect metal shavings in the oil too :clapping:

If you don't want to go that rout and you do get stuck at a light. Some times a little engin reving will trigger the lights. Since the sensor is just a cable that with a current, the magnet affects the current and sets the light off. Sometimes if you are right on top of the wire( in houston they are easy to spot) you can rev the engin and the extra current in your ignition system will do the trick.<-- at least that is the theory. I have used it a couple of times and it seemed to work on my last bike, it had an aluminum frame and it never set the lights off unless I was sitting right over the wire and reving it alittle.

I have rare earth magnets on my oil filter which help grab any magnetic pieces. Do THEY work? Not sure but I have been told the magnets for tripping lights don't.

Cheers

I put my kickstand down on the small "X" in the pavement where the sensors are at. That usually works.

I found by planting both feet and tipping the bike on a lean stator side towards the ground seems to do the job.

LOL, I don't miss those times sitting at a light trying to get it to change! I have to ride close to 20 miles to get to the nearest traffic signal. :punk:

most new light sensors go by mass- or more specifically moving mass. MC's don't have enough to trigger most newer lights. the magnets make the bike "bigger" IF-you are moving.

I put on two big magnets (1x 1.5 inch) and it definitely helped. they sell them at RatShack, Lowes and HomeDepot

I posted a response to this and it never showed up. This is the second time that has happened to me in the last week. Is there some bug in the system?

Anyway, I have tried Green Light Triggers on two bikes and they did not work. Waste of money, at least in my area. There may be different types of sensors though. I think the local ones are weight activated.

I actually install these. (The traffic sensor, not the magnet).

What they actually are is an inductive loop. I make 6' x 30' rectangle with 1" PVC pipe. Then I pull a continuous wire through the rectangle until it makes 3 loops. The ends of this wire are sent back to the traffic control cabinet and hook up to a loop detector amplifier. The detector amp is then "tuned" with no car on the loop to a static amount. This is inductance (measured in henrys). When a car passes over this loop of wire, it acts as an inductor and changes the inductance of the circuit. The detector sees this change and tells the traffic controller that there is a car there.

Wow, sorry for that wall of text. All that being said, these loops are underground and are very subceptable to moisture. And most of them are older than they should be. The circuit goes way out of "tune" and loses it's ability to sense smaller changes....ie our motorcycles.

Now if you had a large emitting electro-magnet attatched to the underside of your bike you could make one detect you better.

Dont have this problem in Tennessee. They signed the lawin 2006 that motorcycles may proceed through a red light, if no other cars are at the intersection and you must make a full complete stop..

Its awesome, stop at the red light wait a second and dart off!! :eusa_dance:

THERE'S NO LAW , BUT I DO THE SAME THING IN JERSEY , IF ITS LATE & NO CARS ARE AROUND ! MOST OF THE TIME THE LIGHTS WILL NOT CHANGE WITH MY MAX ! SO I'LL SIT THERE FOR 2 MINUTES , THEN I GO THOUGH ! THIS IS ALL GOOD IF YOUR A RUNNER ! BECAUSE IF THERE'S A COP LERKING ABOUT & HE SEE'S YOU IN NEW JERSEY , YOU BETTER RUN ! :punk:
