I use KY jelly for the boots . It helps ease the insertion and you can use it to hold gaskets in-position during assembly too.
The same way I 'seated' my airbox, just place a sized piece of plywood on-top of the carb tops, and a 2x6 open-box and then another piece of plywood, and then sit on the stack as I described for the airbox. You're just raising the height of the carbs top w/ the plywood/2x6 'sandwich' to make it easier to sit on.
