Well guys Sean Morley got me hooked on engine cases sleeved and setup for a chain drive. So now I am building a 1428 chain drive with 8.5:1 pistons and H beam rods, pretty much all the goodies to make this motor take the turbo I am putting on it. Ideal goal with this bike is to get 220-250 horse to the ground. I have a PCW swingarm from Sean used that he wasnt sure of the wheel setup on the back, it had a 20MM axle originally. I got an 03 R1 rear wheel and brake setup and am having a 4340 28mm axle made and the chain adjusters and swingarm fitted to 28mm as well. I mocked up the wheel and brake last night and it seems that the rear wheel sprocket is going to sit very close to the swingarm. I am still waiting on my custom made 630 sprocket for the R1 wheel to get an idea of how its going to fit. Just curious if anybody had any input or even better would be some close pictures of the back ends of your bikes and what kind of wheel / brake setup you are running. Thanks guys! Also, once I start assembling here I will make a thread with a bunch of pictures as nobody really goes into the chain drive conversion on here and I think more people might do it if they realized it wasn't a 5K job to get done.

Hey guys, just wanted to try to help a few out that are contemplating a project like this themselves. I have put a lot of time and research into this as I have went. Here are a few pictures.

I am interested in seeing how this goes. Thanks for the informative pics.
Is the notch in the frame and the mods to the tank for the chain?
It's looking good!

I wouldn't suggest you weld the driving sprocket/pinion. It should be installed with the option of removal or offset adjusting

Thanks guys. The notch in the tank is needed for the chain clearance as well as the one in the frame. I did however bring the tank up to 4.5 gallons by doing the work on the back as well.

Looks great i am very interested to know how this project come together for you, I have a 1500 tourmaster an wish i would have had the chiain conversion done when John built my motor,I have been thinking of going with Seans wheels but i think i will just save the money and put it towards a chain drive setup. It would be great to get some info on a vmax that is shaft drive dyno tested then tested with a chain setup to see how much Hp is lost through the shaft.

We can probably set you up with a wheel set still!! Probably even be less expensive!

getting closer! Fred, the trans was done by john and PCW and the sprocket is removable.

Awesome work, I'll be studying these pics because I'm going a similar way next year only I'm going to be using nitrous instead of a turbo... I've already got a pcw swingarm and the wheels now gotta start on the engine, again it's looking sweet bud!

Thanks for all the praise guys. I am waiting on a rear sprocket from supersprox and have to get my Michelin pilot power tire on the rear. Then get carbs built and exhaust on and we should be able to see if it runs ! Anyone know if there is a radial tire available for the stock front wheel? I could use a new front for the season but Hoping to get an r1 front end on the bike next winter.

Well got the bike all together guys! Will get pictures when it's completely done but this thing is a beast for sure. I have to pull the carbs and do a bit more tuning abduction fix a few water leaks. Then it's just a Matter of some fresh paint and cosmetics!

I know its probably a little late but do you have any pictures of fuel tank.. id really like to get mine extended.. I can only ride to work one way without having to get gas lol

If you look back a there should be a few pictures of it all fabbed up. Basically I notched it and then I boxed in the portion for the wheel clearance as it worked out to be about 3 inches which was how much my swingarm is extended. I filled it wiith water and a measuring cup and came up with about 4.5 gallons with the notch in it. With the way I did it, it also would be hard for someone to tell anything was ever done to the tank.

Looks great! I am jealous of your tank and great job on fab! Shoot me your email through PM, and I will send you pictures of my PCW +3 setup.

Wish you luck on your 220+ hp adventure, I just have one piece of advice, start buying stock in rubber, and have rear tires readily available. I put 800 miles on mine, and my tire is shot just from mildly horsing around. There was around 2000 miles put on by previous owner, so got less than 3000 on a rear tire.

Good times! :rocket bike: :punk:

Well I gave up on the turbo setup around christmas as I wanted to do a blow through setup this time and when I started adding parts together I would have easily spent another 5 grand. So I just put a set of high comp pistons in it and am running it. Probably only around 160 or 170 I imagine, but I am glad to have it running finally and it feels pretty powerful the way it is. Yea I learned fast on these bikes about rubber. The prior seasons it was running I would buy 3 rear tires at a time so I always had some on hand. I ran 5 shinko rears and the front shinko has about 1/3rd tread left on it. A big thanks on the fuel tank, it didnt turn out quite as nice as I would have liked, but nobody will ever know other than me. I might try to add some more capacity to it next winter now that I know where everything sits, I think I can get away with a little more in spots and maybe get it close to 5 gallons.

Looks awesome, I'm hoping work picks up for me so I don't have to abandon my chain drive goals because I've already got the swingarm, wheels and trans... I'm going to go a similar way only I'm just going to be using a lot of nitrous and not a turbo... Yours should still run pretty low 10's being a chain drive though.. I'll probably pm you and pick your brain on a few things once I get going on mine... :)

Hey I'm here to help if I can, I know how much work I had to do to get all the info I needed. I got it all together and polished over the weekend and got it home. Still waiting on the weather though. Was going to paint it this spring but completely lost motivation.

So I was wondering about fat tires and chain drives. I have an 85' Im looking to give a complete overhaul to and build up and I wanted to try and run a 240-250 with a chain drive.

I noticed usually you have to notch the tank, but for a wider tire would I not have notch it but instead get an offset front sprocket?

Is that a CB550 in the back round? Btw It looks great with the chain drive. I am curious what kind of HP is lost or gained with this set up.
