That red bike looks CLEEEEEEAN! Very pricey though.

Have you investigated how much it costs to import a bike? Shipping/import duties/legal mumbo jumbo?

If its under $2k for all that, you can find a basically brand new 2007ish with extremely low miles in mint condition for under $7k all day long here in the US.

A newer bike with good maintenance with very low miles wont have any problems. Bottom line. It wont have any problems for many years to come either.

I personally havent had ANY problems with my 93, 06 or my supercharged 04. I've probably logged around 30k miles between them all. With proper maint, they are great daily drivers, weekend warriors, or long haulers. Typically any issues these bikes do develop are extremely easy and cheap fixes......if you do the work yourself. They are fairly simple bikes with simple ignition systems and robust engines. Easy to troubleshoot, especially with the support you will find here.

GO FOR IT!!! :punk:

The red gen 1 has something fishy with the right scoop. I might be seeing it wrongly but it seems its out of place, can be nothing or can be a head on that twisted the "neck" down. If you go look at it check the weldings and signs of frame twisting...

Good spotting!
Lol. I didn't notice, but that reminded me that I was going to comment on the fact that there are no LHS pics!

Now that it's been mentioned, maybe the faux tank is not on properly? The pic looking at the gauges has funny gaps around that panel.

have you considered importing? not sure what the cost is on that.

also, the maintenance on these bikes is pretty easy too. oil changes, diff changes, coolant etc is all right there and doesn't require 45m of work to get to. the valve adjustment is the hardest "regular" maint but at every 25k miles its not something to worry about.

i have these pics of jap vs full hp differences (i believe) take it with a grain of salt but might help to tell if its the non-full hp model.

Some differences I never noticed... reserve switch below the starter button, missing rad reflectors, different seat reflector

Here's mine when I bought it (therfore the paint is not my fault)
#6 no rad reflectors

#3 max speed ~190kph, revs 8,500rpm

Thanks for the info guys. I would never buy one without Vboost, sort of defeats the purpose of the bike IMO!!!! Importing to Aus get expensive ill just keep my eyes peeled here. That 95 does look clean....its 2 hours south of me.....i may go look at it yet i dont know, and if theres something fishy with it i dunno if i should bother

That 1995 looks really clean, worth it if it has vboost......I wouldn't worry about the pipes for now if priority is finding a clean reliable ride. I had cobras on at one time and they were OK.

Like others have said...'93+....'96+ is just a bonus, they are basically all the same.

I think Max's do better if regularly ridden like all big cc bikes do.
Like others here, I do all my work, and its a lot easier working on the Max than on my inline 4.

I upgraded my '85 electronics when everything went, (later year starter, regulater, alternator etc) and now everything has been trouble free the last 3 years.
Thats the main issues with the older ones.

Get a Max The WoW factor is worth every penny.

And your right.....the Myth/Legend is not as fast as you expected it to be.

If you're used to the speed of modern literbikes, then yes, the Vmax may seems like a disappointment. It's a fast bike that can smoke any other cruiser out there, but a stock tune of 112ish horsepower isn't all that much by modern standards. It's fast, but not "as fast" as it used to be compared to what else is out there. Still....a really fun bike to ride, and it's "fast enough" for all but the wildest straight line speed demons. Handling can be improved from spotty to IMO pretty darn good(far and away better than harleys or other big cruisers)

The Jap-spec bikes had the speed nanny thing in the gauge, didn't they? Cut the ignition out at the equivalent of 90mph or something, and the speedo only went to the 120mph instead of 160.

If the v-boost bikes were 140hp at the crank, and the non-boost were only 97, I imagine the Jap spec bikes were only putting, what, like 80hp to the tire? 120mph is probably all they'd be good for anyway.

Well i would be going 95 at the least....trys and get a 2000`s mode........I had ridden a few never bikes my brother YZF1000 and my mates CBR600......But i do think a newer vmax would be better than that old ******* i rode...

Most here would agree a well-maintained '85 or any older bike is better than a caned & unserviced newer bike... .

Use RaWarrior's used bike guide and if it has no 2nd gear issues and isn't an oily p.o.s. w/rideability issues you can probably deal w/everything else which needs addressing by reading here. Post-up a problem and you will get lots of replys.

To be honest i just did my transmission and its not too bad.... These bikes are easy to work on... Especially if you get the.manual. If i had a stock transmission now..knowing how nice the undercut one shifts... I think id swap it out anyway lol.....

I do not know what the cost would be to get a state side one to you. Depending how strong your Ausy dollar is to the usa dollar. And your have to get the bike inspected and lic. for Australia, it may be too costly to do but I would look into it.

I would rather just wait for a nice one here, less hassle.....

I cant wait though....Its a matter of selling my Yamaha WR450F, and my work van....then i can look for one.....So frigin excited....

Im also a real tinkerer......So probably just the bike for me...

After my first test ride, I handed the guy the money while sitting on the bike, I would not get off of it.........I am interested in no other bikes now.

There is something about a VMax...

So my story is that I bought one a few weeks ago from a PO that put 40 miles on it this season and about 100 last season. I honestly don't know how that could be with a machine like a VMax at your beckon call... I've put 1000 miles on it over the past two weeks and other than changing oil and hitting the gas station every 90-100 miles, the only other thing I have done is grin like an idiot - because the effects of the last ride have not yet worn off...

Mine has 19K on it - and only gets smoother with every mile...

One important thing to note - VMaxes come with the Mod Monkey - he will keep you up at night (whispering all sorts of cool ideas....)

Good luck down under!

Glenn,
The Vmax was my dream bike since I was a kid. Never found one that I found worth buying until one lucky day browsing craigslist bike adds. Got mine for 1400$ and wasn't so pretty at first, but a tuff winter and a lot of garage time got me a new bike. Went thru it too to bottom. She ran ok when purchased, runs amazing now. Motors on Vmax bikes are just amazingly powerful what ever bike you chose, vboost is much needed and all the other fixings are just a way to bond with the bike[emoji16]

Set up correctly, the Gen 1 Vmax is one, actually 2 of the most reliable bikes I've ever owned. I have an 89 and a 94 that have run perfect for years with general up keep.
I've owned nearly 40 motorcycles. Start with one that has been taken care of and keep it that way. One that runs and looks right to start with. Newer is Better....
